The system can tell you.
Code:
locate modprobe.conf

There is no modprobe.conf. Take a look at the /etc/modprobe.d/ directory... Create a file then update-modules.

debian doesn't use modprobe.conf it parses the files in /etc/modprobe.d/ dynamically at module load. Any stuff you needed to add to modprobe.conf can be added to a file in /etc/modprobe.d/ Just create a text file and put the stuff in it.

Is there a guide somewhere explaining how and where to modify kernel module options?

Some options seem to be set in /etc/modprobe.d/ and others in /etc/mythtv.

Everything is basically changed in /etc/modprobe.d/. If you look through /etc/modprobe.d you'll see a knoppmyth file which has a line or two that are include /etc/mythtv/blah and all those do is say hey check these files over here too.
