Thanks again for all your advice, but can someone point me to a "dummys guide to installing / upgrading" linux / knoppmyth / knoppix / mythtv to minimise effort?

I already did. Between Cecil's Pamphlet http://www.mysettopbox.tv/doc.html and the latest upgrade hints http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10116 you should be styling. Granted I get a lot of practice, but I can now complete an upgrade (excluding DL-ing and burning the CD, but including the backup and other prep, and the post install tweaks) in under half an hour.

The two main places were people have trouble are, the X config for the TV and the ivtv drivers with certain newer Hauppauge cards. For the first there are plenty of good sample XF86Config-4 files available now, for the second the very detailed CompileIvtv instructions on the wiki should take about 5-10 minutes all told.

I have not tried to reinstall yet and I'm not sure how to proceed. I really want to get a Linux PVR (well, music / media servier) running, but to be honest I am very busy and don't really have the time to invest in getting a system working. I just wanted a simple devise to browse / run my media. I'm happy to play / configure for a few hours, but I have now spent several days trying to get this running and I have to start again from scratch. I think it may be easier to just plug in my ipod.

I probably will try again, but is there a way to simplify the update process? I'm new to all this, and although it is fairly simple to install it is time consuming and it feels too easy to mess things up (as I have clearly done several times).

There is a lot of system corruption going around from people unknowingly using the apt-get command. It's been happening since at least August 2005.

I understand your frustraition. I unknowingly corrupted several KnoppMyth installs before I was told about this dirty little secret. Apparently, the problem is that the /etc/apt/sources.list file which sends apt-get off to servers to grab software, is pointed at the UNSTABLE folders in a number of the servers, so you innocently install Firefox and BOOM, your system is unrepairable. Reinstall is apparently the only fix. After I learned this I didn't use apt-get for anything and all has worked as it was intended.

Some forum posts have suggested manually editing your /etc/apt/sources.list file to change the words UNSTABLE to STABLE everywhere in the file. I did edit my local file, but have not been brave enough to risk apt-get again.

Hi,

Here is a link to what I just gave a gentleman somewhere else. Maybe there is something of value in it. Please notice, I don't use firefox.
