I'm trying to set up KnoppMyth on a Gigabyte GA-7IXE4 board, 1Ghz AMD, 390-odd MB ram, WinTV Go, NVidia Geforce 2 MX400/tv-out. It all seems ok as far as I've gone, but I've stopped because I can't get any network at all.

I've tried 3 different PCI NICs in different slots (all generic enough items that can be found in any box in any spare room), but nothing's getting seen. I don't think it's a Myth issue because I've tried it with another Knoppix (Helix, latest version) and thats the same on all 3 NICs. Helix has no problem on my main PC using any of the same NICs. I've tried diferent, known-working cables and different ports on the router. netcardconfig tells me that there are no supported cards found.

I deduced it was my motherboard, but then when I stuck in a Debian Sarge netinstall CD and started the installer it picked up the NIC and got a DHCP address straight away.

Can anyone help with this? I think it's a problem at the 'Knopp' end of 'Knoppmyth', but there seem to be some knowledgable folk here so I thought I'd have a go.

Have you tried to run as root # netcardconfig with each of those cards? One of them should be good to go.

I think there is something wierd about WinTV Go cards and pci NICs because I got the same problem on NF3-250 board. Try removing the WinTV Go card and see if it picks up the NIC.

I ended up using a WinTV PVR-150 instead and it worked fine with it, but not with the WinTV Go.

mjl - the cards weren't even being seen when KnoppMyth booted, so it wasn't reaching that stage.
Pain - that sounds like a possible cause. I ended up swapping out the mobo for another one I had in the heap (an Asus AK33) and it works fine.

I just had a similar problem with the onboard network adapter on my Asus A8N-VM CSM motherboard.

I had everything working fine with the system - network, sound, video.
Then, I did a BIOS update and the BIOS settings were reset to defaults (plug and play turned off). After that, KnoppMyth could not talk to the onboard network adapter any more. After I noticed plug and play was off in the BIOS, I turned it back on (the way I had it set before the BIOS update). The onboard network adapter worked again.

So, you might try plug and play settings.

Let me repeat the question..

Have you tried to run as root # netcardconfig with each of those cards? One of them should be good to go.

If not, remove all cards that you can, check you cmos settings, and retry. If you get networking, install cards one by one to see if something is fighting for irq space.

What does dmesg have to report?

neutron68 - I tried plug and play settings, but it didn't help. Updating the bios would have been the next step.

mjl - I tried running netcardconfig and it said 'no supported cards found'. dmesg showed no sign of a network card being seen.

As I said, I tried loading Debian Sarge on it and it worked fine so it didn't seem to be an irq problem. I 'solved' it in the end by putting in a different motherboard - one that I would have used to begin with if I wasn't lazy.
