I was lucky (or unlucky) that I owned this card before. It is highly recommended because of it's low cost and extensive feature set, but has anyone ever made it work with mythtv? I've read all the forums and tried all the different strategies. Keep in mind, that I have a high GAF here, so it has to "just work" once it's setup. The girlfriend isn't going to be typing things into a shell or modifying outputs. It needs to use the mythtv interface and just work. I'm going to say an evil word here, but this card works in Windows. If I can't make optical spdif work in knoppmyth, then it's a show stopper for me and I have to go back to Windows.
Are there any other cards out there with optical output that "just work"? I'm willing to throw money at this problem. I've heard some chatter about sb.

This is the card used in the KnoppMyth Reference Platform (KRP), aka "Dragon".

I've got it, optical S/PDIF to my surround receiver.
That being said, I'm currently having trouble (again) with a finnicky Xine which balks at something being already "in use". I've got to tinker with it some more. There is a config file in the $KRP_DIR/Dragon directory (on your system, right now!)

Correction - it's working fine now.
Somehow, I had managed to NOT HAVE ANY asound.conf or asoundrc
So I did: cp Dragon_asoundrc /etc/asound.conf
rebooted, and it's working.
Well, I still have to click "ok" on the error when Xine starts to play, but then ENTER and it plays anyway.

Thornsoft, I just wanted to say "Thank You" for the cp Dragon_asoundrc /etc/asound.conf tip. I have noticed that the .conf file isn't consistently being created/recreated on reinstalls and upgrades. I also needed to update my mplayer command line.
I am no enjoying sound on my dragon spec FE when using MythVideo!
I do have a question for you. I also like to play family videos in MythGallery. In the B7 release, at least on initial install, I was able to get sound when playing videos in MythGallery. After a B7 reinstall and C7 upgrade then reinstall, the video plays, but no sound. This is after the asound.conf cp.
Any thoughts?

If you're using the Dragon asoundrc (aka /etc/asound.conf) setting your sound device in MythTV to "ALSA:mplayer" everywhere should re-enable sound in mythgallery. _________________ KnoppMyth R5.5

Human,
Do you have the same problem that I have in Xine? When I play a DVD (or ripped DVD with 5.1) in Xine, I get a message about the sound device being in use, and I have to click OK before it'll play. Then it plays fine. I am curious as to whether you see it too, if you play a DVD with Xine.
This problem/need will probably go away with MythTV 0.2, as they seem to be working on beefing up the internal DVD player.

I got that message to go away for me by making a change to my asound.conf file. This change.
change the pcm!default from pcm envy_spdifdmix to "spdif" and S32_LE
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "spdif"
format S32_LE
}
}
I don't get that message any more in Xine and am able to play things in 5.1, 6.1 (DTS) or 7.1

At least for me I did have the pass thought set in my Xine config and was getting the error. That is when I decided to play around with the settings and found some other posts talking about this also. I just played with it until I found the setting that got rid of the message and allowed me to have 6.1 or 7.1 sound out of the optical out. Also I did build my system using the dragon specs.

Yes, I had it set to passthrough. I used the dragon conf, but had to change one thing to get it to work at all. OSS to ALSA maybe?
I can post my xine config if you'd like.
There's probably something in your scripts that does something somewhere that makes your xine config work for you, but I had to change it slightly, and maybe that's what made this further tweak necessary.

So I've been limping along in my ancient version of R5A12 for a while now, having to set rate locking and change the sample rate manually when watching videos (I gave up on music, it's been delegated to the iPod). Took the leap to R5C7 in the hopes of solving my problems. It appears rate locking has been fixed (alsa driver probably), but now I have my choice: tv audio passed through the line in, or gallery audio.
All of this seems intimately related to alsamixer settings. If I set IEC958 and IEC958 1 to PCM, I get gallery audio but no tv audio. If I set them to H/W In 0 and H/W In 1 respectively I get tv audio but no gallery audio. H/W and H/W 1 are both set to PCM. I've copied the dragon asoundrc to /etc/asound.conf and tried every possible audio output setting in utilities/setup-settings-general and utilities/setup-setup-media settings-music settings-general that I could find in searching (/dev/dsp/, /dev/adsp/, ALSA, ALSA:spdif, ALSA:mplayer, ALSA:plughw:0,1, ALSA:iec958). I was sure I had it when I found this article ( http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DigitalOut) and set it to "ALSA:plughw:0,1".
The only odd thing that I see in dmesg is: ice1724: Invalid EEPROM version 1. I might try upgrading alsa to 1.0.10, or screw around with dmix if I can't get this working.
Could someone who has thier AV710 working give me the output of amixer?
