what kind of details would be helpful for you to know....just give me the idea and i will do whatever i can to provide them for you....i am currently using two hard drives, one with knopp myth and the other one with ubuntu dapper...i have to switch the ide cable and power from one to the other to use the other one...any suggestions about that.....do you need system specs because it is a 1.0 gig, 20 gig hard drive, 512 mb memory, cd burner...nothing really special and the thing runs rock solid....no problems...i want to thank you again for you help and hope we can get the thing up and running...

Hi gascan,
Is that high test?
A couple of questions..
Version ?
Auto install ?
Did you go through all the setup steps? alt s
Did you ever have the frontend come into view? alt m
If so, did you go through all the Utility/Setup check points?
Try starting frontend from a term window, then if there are errors some of them will be reported. How you ask, do alt X on the desktop. enter mythfrontend & and press enter.
Dual boot is possable... different topic.
Have a great day!

Hi gascan,
Glad you caught the pun Ok, let us see if we make it work but you have got to give details as we go and fill in the blank areas. With what you have told us so far, there is nothing available for the faintest clue.
So far you have told us:
R5C7 (latest) NTSC or PAL
1 ghz cpu
512 mem
20 gig drive (must be ide at that size)
video? may be a factor
audio? may not be of value
network? may not be of value
Open a term, alt x and at the prompt...
$ tail -100 /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log
scroll through the those last 100 lines and see if it complains about anything, maybe .qt ?
do a df -h and give the status results, here are some ideas for values.
/ (4~5 gig)
swap (512)
/myth (remainder)
I suspect you may have to do a manual install or at least an auto upgrade.
You mention ubuntu, how did that have issues as you can run it as a live (from cd only) on most machines with 128meg + and that are able to boot from a cd.

the computer is currently running ubuntu dapper with no problems what so ever....i mean this thing is rock solid....i have broadband internet setting behind a wired router....the hard drive is ide.....i havent tried sound using knopp myth yet but that is no big deal for me right now....i figured out how to fix the sound in ubuntu using the alsa mixer.....but the mythtv stuff is harder...i tried the commands you gave me and nothing different except at the end it said couldnt write the file...i may have to do a complete reinstall which is no big deal because there is nothing on it except myth...i was just wondering if there is a place where i could see someones configuration with a system simular to mine but i realize that every system is different....i did have myth up and running under ubuntu breezy....but never functional...i could surf the net, check weather, and check news rss, but no video, no games (real bummer), i didnt try the phone though. i will try the suggestions you gave and repost tomorrow as it is getting real late here....thanks again for you help and interest.....

Hi gascan,
Armed with what you have told us, I suggest doing a straight auto install. If it doesn't come up properly, then you will need to provide details and log outs before anyone except God will be able to help.
Keep it simple, go one step at a time.
