I had a power outage and luckily I have both knoppmyth machines on a power bar so no zapping the systems. The problem is now I try and boot the backend and keep getting error messages about not being able to read inodes. I ran the fsck -y /dev/hda1 command and it claimed to have fixed all the errors but the machine will not boot. The error I receive is warning unable to boot inital console?

Is there a way to even reinstall the /dev/hda1 root partition and leave the /dev/hda3 alone?

I would first check that you can boot a live CD (like Knoppix) to see if something got fried on your motherboard. See if you can read something on the hard drive to test the controller chip.

Oh ya everything works I can surf the mounted image once I boot up with the live knoppix cd just the filesystem or certain files are ruined. I wish there was a way to reinstall the root files without clobbering my myth partition.

If your using a journaling file system like ext3 for your root partition then it should self repair. Maybe there is a way to force it with fsck?

Both filesystem root and myth are ext3. When I ran the fsck on the myth it came clean but on the root it fixed tons of errors and then the boot error message appeared.

Not to long ago, cesman posted something simular to his recovery of a trashed system. The big key was the salvage of the mysql files as once he had those he was able to do an upgrade to rebuild the / partition. Then return the mysql files to the orignial location and come away with a smile.

You may want to search for that post or maybe someone remembers it and can give you the link. I just remember the story

I have had this happen twice in two weeks. It totally sucks.

The system hung while watching hdtv (probably ran out of room on /myth) and i could get it unstuck so i powered down manually.

When it came back up it found errors on root and said to run fsck manually.

The first time it deleted important inodes and trashed the system.

The second time I had just finished installing R5C7 from scratch and tweaking but hadn't tried to reimport the tv shows to the database or done a backup.

DAMN it. UPS wouldn't have helped me.

But I thought ext3 with logs was supposed to solve this.

What should I do?

If you are doing hd what is some of the hardware info? Drive size will bring it to it's knees.

I just ended up reinstalling by the way.. My new thing might be to have another machine act as a fileserver and then it can upload the shows to it. But the shows arent mission critical.

These guys on the forum are good but they don't read minds very well (some exceptions maybe) so with out details no one can really offer assistance. The little kernel of HD changes the whole picture.

To answer an earlier question,

simply do auto upgrade. That will redo hda1 only. Manual install should work also.

Take it one machine at a time. Backend first. An auto upgrade or manual install should get it going / cleaned up. I don't understand the trashing on a power off. Use what ever version is your favorite, but tell us what it is that is being used.
