I have tried to apt-get install x11vnc
and I get "package not found" error.

I am using the www.debian-multimedia.org sarge main link in the sources.list file

is it supposed to be something different?

I have also done an apt-update first still not found...

I'm not sure what you want with VNC. I use SSH to get into my myth box and maintain it. If I need the odd X window I use SSH to connect the X server on my box to the client on the myth box. But I have only done that a couple of times to prove it can be done. ALL of my maintaining is done via SSH and text windows.

And, it goes without saying, VNC is way too slow to actually watch shows via myth.

yeah that would be great!

Im a linux newb so should I jsut follow these instrucitons?
http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... romWindows

or isthere a better way?

Also I would still like to know why I cant find the package. The other package I really would like to obtain is linneighborhood. I found the wiki that shows instrcutions for installing linneighborhood on knoppmyth but again apt-get cant find the package.

I know text is so much fun to memorize, but cmon GUI's are so much easier on the eyes.

by nature us humans are visual animals :D

Why bother with a GUI if it isn't any better or faster than simply typing in a command? FreeNX is already included with KnoppMyth (all you need is a client on whatever OS you are using). Why bother installing VNC?

Firstly, since you're new to LINUX, the OS does have quite a steep learning curve. Here are your best resources:

mysettopbox.tv search
Knoppmythwiki.org
google

Just be sure to do several searches on the topic before you post, odds are you aren't the first person to ask the question.

You can use google, but don't forget about the wiki: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=NXHowTo

No dude, SSH is a secure telnet protocol. 99.9% of everything you can do or need to do w/ your mythbox can be done this way. Get yourself a good ssh client like PuTTY. Most anything you can do from your LINUX console, you can do from a PuTTY window on your windows machine.

The post you referenced in your original question will allow you to make your frontend window appear on your windows machine (although you cannot watch shows/videos with it); the wiki page was based on my original post in these forums you can read here. It is only useful for configuring options remotely (i.e. inside your windows PC in front of these forums or google, etc. in another window side-by-side).

For R5C7 you need to get & install vnc manually since /etc/apt/sources.list doesn't currently point to any:

wget http://debian.crosslink.net/debian/pool ... 1_i386.deb
dpkg -i x11vnc_0.7-1_i386.deb

Then follow the configuration steps in the Wiki.

I may be stating something blatently obvious for some, however, I feel it worth repeating for other noobs such as myself.

DON'T change your /etc/apt/sources.list to UNstable and try to install vncserver. I did that last week and it hosed my entire system. I know the wiki mentions vncserver, but R5C7 doesn't like the unstable version.

That being said, thanks to Knoppmyth for an easy install, I was back up and running in about 35 minutes.

FWIW, I have tested NX (see NXHowTO), and it works for running mythtv-setup and mythfrontend (live TV doesn't work, but my aging boxx is nearly too slow for that anyway).

The only program that I have been able to get to work with knoppmyth on my pocketpc was tightvnc. I had no success with pocketputty and several telnet progs. I have no remote control and use the ppc for changing channels which is very responsive, but everything else tried was, as would be expected, very slow. I have no problem with putty from my winxp box.

I've been using vnc to do things with the mythtv gui menus on my laptop. I can't read these things on my 12 year old tv very well. I should find a windows client for this freenx thing I guess but laziness rules the day and I have vnc on my desktop too.
