MythTV doesn't care about your emulators. The question really should be which emulator work best with Linux. XMAME rules. Xe is works well as well. Those are the only two I've used. The downloading of ROMs isn't to be discussed on this forum.

Well, XMAME it is. Thanks.

What about remotes/joysticks. Any recomendations?

Hi Cecil,
I know where you're coming from here. But I think it would cut down on the newbie set-up problems and improve the "out of box experience" to have a game or two pre-loaded with the KM install. There are several games out there that have free/clear or expired copyrights. I think including just one of those would make it a lot easier to get started with KM, if the MythGame was working on a fresh install.

There are already a couple games included. Links to free ROM would be appreciated...

I have my playstation controller connected to the parallel port using an adaptor I build. Works a treat.

I agree. I first unzipped all those roms in the rom directory, ran scan, etc, nothing worked. If I would have seen just zip files, that would have helped alot.

Thats pretty cool. I probably want to get two joysticks for the multi-player experience though.

There should be no need to unzip ROMs.

Has anyone tried to use the Happauge remote as a "poor mans" joystick (for XMAME)? Re-program some key codes?

From my experience a remote would be *seriously* unresponsive in the context of playing games.

Gotit (grin). So, if I'm interested in a joystick that is not too expensive, possibly wireless, and is capable of two players (or multiple joysticks) are there any recommendations?

Wires are probably OK I suppose. USB? Which ones work OK.

Thanx

You can support upto 5 or 6 playstation controllers (I believe, or at least 4 anyway) on the one parallel port. I have mine setup with two controllers. I power mine using the 5V from a USB port, so my dongle actually oplugs into both the parallel port and a usb port.

I had very little trouble using a cheap $5 USB gamepad on special at my local retailer. I think I might have had to change the default joystick device but no biggie. I believe the Logitech Rumblepad is a great wireless controller although it doesn't 'rumble'. Personally I now use a BTC 9019URF wireless keyboard.

Well, that was a strange one. Tried to get XMAME going and it for some reason it just wasn't working. Struggled with it for a while, scratched my head and eventually came up with the solution:

The ROMs were all uppercase! Changing the case of the extension didn't work, but changing the entire thing to lowercase did.

Odd stuff! Hopefully that's of help to someone; dunno where exactly the problem lies -- suspect it's with XMAME itself from command line testing -- but hey.
