I had a go at setting my box up to use the digital output, which I failed at. It doesn't matter, as the box isn't gonna be plugged into a surround sound amp for now.

But in the process, I stopped getting sound from mplayer (and mythvideo), so I thought, that's not a problem, I'll just do a backup and re-install. This didn't fix it, so it's got to be something that's backed up that's the problem.

I'm still getting sound from DVDs (xine) and from MP3s (MythMusic) just not mplayer. I'm running R5C7
