This has been covered - search the forum. There's a manual bit that you have to do to complete the installation.

I found that the script (install-nvidia-debian.sh) only works for nvidia drivers up-to 8178. All nvidia drivers after that, it craps out. It needs a rewrite.

I switched to using the nvidia installer script and it works perfectly. It even runs nvidia-xconfig for you.
Use:
"wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linu ... 2-pkg1.run"
then execute the script
"sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run"

Eric

I tried to use the NIVDIA installer for 1,0-8672, however I keep getting the error message that X appears to still be running and that I must not exit X prior to installing.

Every time I try to exit X, it respawns.

Also tried chanting init-tab to run level 3, however my computer (Knoppmyth R5C7) just loads X and launches MythTV anyway.

How do I exit X completely in MythTV, or boot to terminal mode (no X)?

Forgive the dumb question - I am a newbie to Linux and X...

Thanks,

Greg

To switch to a virtual console, use CTRL+ALT+F1

From the console, as root run
Code:
/etc/init.d/gdm stop

to stop X, then run the nvidia installer.

Run
Code:
/etc/init.d/gdm start

to start X back up again.

Thanks - that worked!

I had to stop it twice, for some strange reason...

Now I have the latest NVIDIA driver installed!! :D
