Hi, I have a PVR 150, non MCE with the larger remote (>34 buttons) Is there any way I can set this up so the power button on the remote will turn on my television? I know this same remote can be programmed to change channels on cable boxes, etc, and was wondering if there were some way to have it control my TV, only the power button. This would get me down to only having one remote and would be really nice.

First of all, let me said, that I myself am not very experienced with mythtv setup, but it seems to me that you have a logic problem at hand, rather than a computer problem.

What I am trying to say is that I do have a remote that controls my mythtv and an IR blaster that passes channel-changing commands from my remote to my directv reciever, but the (transparent) IR-blaster is glued on top of the IR-sensor of the directv reciever; in other words, an IR-blaster can only be in one place at a given time...it cannot be pointing to your cable box and your tv at the same time.

So, I presume that the remote control that you have is not a universal-learning remote control; otherwise, you wouldn't be asking the question, right? Then:

Solution #1: Get a learning remote control and teach it to behave like your remote control and then get the power button to behave like your tv's remote control's power button. You can also use that learning remote to control your cable box (outside mythtv), tv (outside mythtv), dvd player, vhs-tape player, and sound equipment...I bought one and did exactly that...went from 5 down to one remote!

Say, I just found this

http://www.irblaster.info/distribution.html

in another posting...they don't say absolutely nothing on how it works, whether all 4 outputs send the same signal at the same time or there is a way to make only one of them work at a time...either way, for that kind of money, even less, you can buy a nice universal learning remote like I suggested before.

Regards

So what you're saying is that you don't think the remote that comes with the PVR-150 (non MCE) can be programmed to send the power signal to my RCA tv? I'm thinking it can with some tweaking, or else why would they have provided an IR transmitter along with the reciever? Maybe it won't work out of the box, and maybe it involves some severe tweaking, but I'm thinking it can be done.

Here is the thing...sure, your remote control can be made to turn your tv on and off if that is ALL you are going to be using it for. In other words, you would need to glue the ir-blaster right on the tv's ir-sensor, hence, you now cannot use your remote to control anything else (other than controlling mythtv menu).

So, if you are not using your remote control to change channels, I guess it is do-able. Are you changing chanels through the back of your cable box? or are you feeding cable to the tunner and it itself does it? Do you ever have a need to switch to a channel larger than 125? Around my area, the first 125 channels are viewable, but anything else is encrypted, hence one needs to use the cable box and cannot feed the signal directly to the tunner card.

Like I said before, I am not that experienced but I would venture to say that you could look into the instructions for remote control and ir-blaster setup and in the troubleshooting part, they may talk about testing your ir-reciever and re-directing linux's corresponding device to echo to the command line; then, with your tv's remote, you point it to your mythtv's ir-reciever and see what echos on the terminal. Then, you program your mythtv's remote to generate that same command when you press the power button.

I will post the link to the instructions I followed, later on tonight when I get home.

Hope this better illustrates what I am trying to say.

Germán

Here is the link I am talking about.

I would be interested I knowing what you end up doing.

Greetings.

Your first paragraph sums it up exactly. I'm only using basic cable (around 70 channels where I am) and am using the PVR to change channels, so this would be the only 'external' function my remote will have to perform. I don't have any external cable box or anything like that going on. Thanks for your replies, I will check out the link you posted and post my progress here as soon as I get a chance to mess with this.
