Hi,
As I'm off work at the moment and I can actually do some work to my Mythen box without the gf breathing down my neck I have been wanting to do the mplayer upgrade to the most recent version and get the latest codecs etc.

So far I've read this thread on the upgrade. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4706&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Read the information on the wiki:
http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=Recompile+Mplayer
And the instructions on the mplayer website.
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1.html

Now my question:

Is it just a simple case of following the instructions on the wiki?

Are there any other words of wisdon that may make this whole thing go smoother ?

Reason I'm asking is I want to ensure I will continue to have lirc support after the upgrade. (It took me long enough to get the remote to work in the first place  )

What are other people's experiences with this recompile?

Any info would be greatly received.

In advance: Thanks guys.

Chris

Use the wiki if you want the bleeding edge version. Use my instructions if you want a potentially more stable product.

Nope. I spent a fair amount of time in the instructions here. Let us know how it goes for you.

Ah, I reread your post from the begginning... managed to miss a bit.
The major difference is your inclusion of the Xvid 1.1.0 release as far as I can see.
What benifits does this package bring exactly?

Oh, and will be trying mplayer upgrade tomorrow. Will report back success/failures.

I have used Graysky's howto with diffrent versions using Mplayer 1.0pre7 and 20050412 codec pack and always worked great.

A 3rd way to update Mplayer is to use built in script to install mythstream

/usr/local/bin/mythstream-install.sh

Check the WIKI if you use that method, Mplayer versions have changed and codecs pack hostnames may have changed as well, but does install Mythstream too, killing 2 birds one stone.

Mythstream... good idea.... it certainly adds another dimension to it.

I think in this instance I'll just upgrade mplayer and worry about mythstream at a later date.

--- soon to follow --- the story of my success

Well, it as it turns out... it all worked perfectly.

I had to burn the relevent .bz2 files to a cd as my myth box isn't networked currently. Even so, once I had put the .bz2 folders into a temporary folder on my harddrive I was able to extract them, make and make install the packages.

The oply issue I ran into was of my own making: I downloaded the wrong package for xvidcore... which caused me to scratch my head for a while. But one I realised what the issue was the rest went very smoothly.

I've had a quick look at some recordings and lirc is working which was my major concern.

I couldn't see (hear?) any immidiate problems with audio sync, but if there is a problem, no doubt it will become clear.

I've not had a chance to check live TV as both tuners are in use at the moment.

So hopefully with lots of new codecs I can watch almost any file I throw at Mplayer.

Cool.

Thanks Graysky.
