I did a clean wipe and reinstall of my knoppmyth box last week and noticed something interesting (R5C7):

once the initial install is done and you reboot, during the reboot it appears the scripts try to go to nvidia.com to retrieve something (latest drivers?). For me, this fails because i'm using Wifi and the install hasn't reached the point where the network gets configured.

a) is this nvidia bit important?
b) if so, is there any way to trigger it later (once the network is actually functioning?

It should still work since it has local copies of the files, but it's better to make sure.

Yes.

Yes.
Code:
/usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-debian.sh 1.0-7174 -force

When you do get your network running, note that the script (install-nvidia-debian.sh) only works for nvidia drivers up-to 8178. All nvidia drivers after that, it craps out. It needs a rewrite.

I switched to using the nvidia installer script and it works perfectly. It even runs nvidia-xconfig for you.

Here's how:
get a shell and login as su or root,
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
cd to your favorite download directory,
wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linu ... 2-pkg1.run
then execute the script
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run
at the end of the process the nvidia installer will restart x-windows for you

Good luck!
Eric

edit - nevermind maybe... what I needed was the command "netcardconfig". That's a new one to me... 10 years ago it was netconfig :)

Neutron,

Any help for a relative newbie who can't seem to get started? I have an msi k8ngm2 with the 6150 chip, and I end up at the login prompt not quite sure how to proceed. Can't seem to find the text based network config, can't get the easy x-based config without x-windows, can't get x-windows without the nvidia drivers, can't get the nvidia drivers without the network. So basically I suck and need a hand ;)

I had the EXACT same problem with my Asus motherboard - the drivers included in KnoppMyth were too old to work with the nvdia 6150 chip and the installation bombed out before it got finished.

The tricks to getting it working:
1. when the installer bombs out to the shell window, log in as root or su, if you aren't already (the prompt will be a # if you are logged in as root)
2. get your network started by typing dhclient (this kickstarts the network card into DHCP mode). You can reconfigure it for a static IP address later. This will get you running so you can get the nvidia driver.
3. THEN you can use the wget command to go get new nvidia drivers. You need to get driver 8178 or newer for the 6150 chip to function.
Change directories to your favorite download directory, download the file and run the script.
Code:
cd /usr/src
wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-8762/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run

4. at the end of the process the nvidia installer will restart x-windows for you and then the KnoppMyth install process can continue.
If the install process doesn't start back up automatically, you may need to reboot the machine.

The clouds are parting and the sun is starting to shine on the nvidia 6150 video chip!

I'm watching full HDTV in 1080i from the VGA connector of my motherboard and you should be able to also. (you will need to edit the modelines in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file to configure the 6150 chip to output 1080i)

Good luck!
Eric
