The new boards are using slighty different chips that the older drivers don't support. Try upgrading to the latest version of the ivtv driver. See the CompileIvtv directions on wiki for details, and where ever it says 0.4.4 substitute 0.4.6. Searching for the keywords shown in red will find a link directly to that page.

BTW - Don't be intimidated by the directions, they only look complicated becasue they are very, very detailed. If you get things setup so that you can cut & paste from your browser into a shell session on the KnoppMyth box, you can complete the whole process in 5-10 minutes.

Given your situation I wouldn't upgrade to 0.4.6.

The wiki 0.4.4 instructions are detailed, but obsolete. For example:

The file hcwpvrp2.sys in pvr_1.18.21.23257_whql.zip has moved to DriverA1/hcwPVRP2.sys so the ivtvfwextract.pl script fails.

And the names of the firmware files have changed (unless I'm reading it wrong HcwMakoA.ROM is now v4l-cx25840.fw) so all the instructions pertaining to that are obsolete as well.

So fix 'em, that's the whole point of having them on a wiki. ;-)

BTW - I actually tried to update those a week or so back when 0.4.6 came out only to have the wiki go walk-about before I finished verifying my changes. I haven't had time to get back to it since. The ones that are there still worked as recently as last week.

I'd love to fix them, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get my system stable!

Did you recompile the firmware and the driver? It seems that most of the changes have to do with the firmware.

Some of the other things I'v noticed are that:

http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware indicates new file names.

The v41* files are not in what I believe is the most recient firmware bundle pvr_2.0.43.24103_whql.zip. (presumably related to file name change). Neither are HcwMakoA.ROM or HcwFalcn.ROM.

The firmware seems to have been Windows Hardware Qualified, so the zip file ends with "_whql" and is located here: ftp://ftp.shspvr.com/download/wintv-pvr_150-500/inf/

Step 8 - In R5C7 the "simple=1" option for msp3400 is not in /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv

Step 9 - In R5C7 "ivtv" is not in /etc/modules so it can not be removed.

I've tried using the firmware versions specified in the wiki and while it seemed to work, it didn't fix my problem. I don't know if that's because I used old firmware, or because ivtv dosn't support the new chipset in my pvr-350.

Right now I'm resigend to waiting for smarter people then me to release the next version of KnoppMyth with the hope that it will work with my PVR-350. :(

uconn4699, you might try creating a file: /etc/modprobe.d/ivtv and putting "options ivtv tuner=50,50" in it (no quotes). Then run the command "update-modules". Turn your machine off and wait 5 min.

I found that by following this thread: http://www.mythtvtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3054

Good luck.

These are both harmless, and the commands used should do the right things (nothing) if it's "already like that".

I am having video quality issues with the PVR-500. I think it is related to the firmware. I am replacing MCE 2k5 with MythTV and when I booted into MCE 2k5, the PVR-500 performed like a champ.

So my question is this: how do I extract the newest firmware from the _whql.zip file?

No need. The recommended firmware (which has changed slightly) is available from the ivtv site linked to under the CompileIvtv directions. That page really is one stop shopping, even though I need to update it to 0.4.6 it still has pointers to all the right places to find more recent data. Go to the page, follow the links, you'll soon know far more about the ivtv driver than you ever hoped to in your wildest nightmares. ;-)

I would look for a post by Russ he or she may have figured out the issue many say it is not a good idea to keep you're apples all in one basket but in this case I suggest it.
I say we have a dedicated thread to solving hauppauge IR blsater issues there are several posts on several forums about this issue... If we at this forum could have an orderly approach to solving this issue I think nothing but good could come out of it.

BTW - The page has been updated. If you've got ssh access to your KM box set up and can cut and paste from your browser into the ssh session, then this procedure can be completed in ~5 minutes. http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CompileIvtv

If you have issues with 0.4.6 you can even revert to 0.4.4 following the same directions.
