After much fanfair, I FINALLY got Mythknop to install and load, and finally got to the front-end screen. However, I use the Gainward GF4 MX420 64MB that has a TV out and IS A NVIDIA adaptor.

I followed the instructions in http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10479 in which you download the latest drivers directly from the NVIDIA website. As well, I stopped X, as per his instructions, and ran the automatic script, which installed the new driver. I had the new driver start when X started, and renabled X.

I then restarted, and it went back into the Frontend, but All I have is still the background that says "MYTH" verticaly on the left of my screen. I then RE-DOWNLOADED, and RERAN the script, but I still have the same problem.

Anyone have any suggestions as to why I don't see any icons? All I have is the background....

The rest of the system is as follows:

ASUS A7V333| Socket A
AMD 2100+
Maxtor 200 GIG ide 133 drive
Lite-on DVD-RW
512 MB RAM
Sound Blaster LIVE!
Haup. TV-500 Dual Tuner Card

NOTE: I have not connected the COAX cables to the back of the machine, as its being installed into a wall, so I cant attach them until i finish the setup.

AS WELL:
While writing this, the mainscreen finally come to life, and I went to schedule a recording, and it crashed to the "Knoppixmyth" Background with the pinguin on the couch. So factor into its seems that its also EXTREAMLY slow....Ive been working on this for too long....

So, suggestions?

First things first, it is KnoppMyth, nothing else. Wuth the Geforce 4, there should be no need to get the latest nVidia drivers. The drivers on the CD should work just fine.

In reading this thread, something seems amiss. After rebooting, was installing the nvidia driver the first thing you did? Don't expect MythTV to work w/o configuring it... After X starts, a xterm should open and ask for the root password. you need to go thru the configuration before using MythTV.

Yes, I went through the set-up process, in configuring all my cards, downloading the program guide. For some reason, it seems EXTREAMLY slow, it installs KnoppMyth fine, and quickly, but after I take out the CD, it takes forever for it to do anything.

BOOTSPLASH was not installed, I told it no when it promted. So after i configured it, it was still VERY SLOW, and it loaded the frontend. I tried to schedule a recording, and it crashed to the screen with the pinquin on the couch. I tried rebooting, and it is still slow. it takes nearly 10 min. for the frontend to load.

P.S. :( Sorry about calling it Mythknop and not KnoppMyth, it was like 11 o'clock (I havn't set my time zone yet) and I worked a 12 hour shift yesterday. Today is easier, thank god.

Thanks for your help!

Earlier Via chipset and DMA in combination w/ IvyTV were problematic. But I thought by the time the KT333 (or whatever the chipset is...) rolled around, this was resolved. Have you ran memtest to test your memory? You should run mythfrontend an xterm to see any text that displays when it crashes. Those messages maybe helpful.

VIA VT6306 CHIPSET

okay, im going to try a fresh install, i ripped all the cables out of the wall. And am in the process of connecting everything. Maybe with everything connected, and an AUTO install, not a FAILSAFE install will work. If it doesnt, ill try and post the log. You going to be around later?

Thanks again!

I'm always around, KnoppMyth is after all my brainchild. I'd never recommend doing an install via failsafe... If doing an install the normal way doesn't work, then you need to provide details as to what is failing where.

The install seems to have stopped, or at least is going very slowly.

Loaded the CD, booted, selected KnoppMyth as the install choice, and started.

These are the last steps it takes:

"Building card database.....
Configuring via82xx........
Running Update-modules....
creating snddevices...
Setting default volumes...
(this takes a long time, about five full minutes, is that normal?)

Scanning for Harddisk partitions and creating /etc/fstab...
Using Swap partition /dev/hda2
Network device eth0 detected, DHCP broadcasting for IP
Auto Mounter started for FLOPPY CDROM CDROMHDC
HDC: DMA Interrupt recovery
HDC: lost interrupt
HDC: DMA Interrupt recovery
HDC: lost interrupt

INIT: Entering runlevel: 3

And its completely stopped

Try booting from the cd and running 'testcd'. And 'memtest' as well while you are there.

I came back from dinner and it actually had gone slightly farther. It launched the Knoppmyth configuation setup, and I entered my user password, but now im waiting for it to ask me my administator password. I mean, this is taking like 10-20 min for it to go one step. How long should this take?

Not that long. Either the CD is corrupt or you've got a BIOS/hardware issue somewhere I'd guess.

its def. hardware then, because this is CD number 3 that ive tried using. UG, this is harder then I expected.

And i did some reasearch, the chipset is actually the

VIA KT333 / VT8233A

Anyone know if there are some known issues with this, and what i can do to correct them?

Not seen anything but success posted for KT-333 (Tier 1/2/3)

Worth trying testcd to make sure. It might also show up an issue with your drive. Have you tried installing anything else on this hardware like Windows or another linux distro? Have you tried memtest?

im running a MEMTEST now, see if that fixes it. I also swaped out my DVD burner for an old DVD read drive I had laying around. See if that solves the problem.

how long should MEMTEST take?

As long as you let it. Its worth letting it run through your memory at least 10 times because there are some issues which take a few passes to show up.
