Is there any performance increase from a RAID0 that would make its use in MythTV practical?

If so how could this be done from a fresh install?

I also have an IDE Promise controller, that I was thinking about doing a RAID0 with, but my open PCI slots are getting scarce. In the long run would the use of a hardware RAID controller be more practical?

well what most people have suggested is lvm (logical volume manager) what this gives you is the ability to group multiple disks together to have larger volumes, and the ability to add in new disks later on.

Raid also groups multiple disks to get larger volumes, but it gives you the added benefit (raid0) of faster disk access, but does not allow the addition of more disks.

The reason people suggest lvm is because in myth disk access is not the bottleneck. The biggest problem people have is they run out of disk space, so lvm allows you to add more without having to rubuild everything. There is just nothing that mythtv does that requires faster access than your standard ATA100.
