Has anyone done this? Since I have a huge harddrive to record video recordings, why not also record time-lapse video of my house using a 4 channel card (unknown?) hooked to various cameras around my property. I've seen 4 channel cards at Fryes Electronics for about $70, but I have no idea if they work with linux.

I could then play back the video using the standard mythtv interface.

Any ideas?

Interesting. However, I don't see a list of supported DVR cards that work under linux (and Motion). I've seen this one:

Motion did go away but it came back! As far as I'm away, motion doesn't care about your specific card. Again, point your browser to the IP for your backend and follow the link to the Motion Guide.

There is software for linux called Zoneminder which seems to interface into all sorts of cameras, from USB to various BT878A-based DVR cards:

It uses Apache for the interface, so it would easily plug into MythTV/MythWeb. Looks pretty impressive. Not really sure if it replaces the functionality of Motion, but it sure looks great. I may have to pick up one of those cheap DVR cards and start playing with it.

Mythtv is very cool. I use it for everything, PVR, family photos, family videos, my MP3 collection, games, news/weather. I still haven't explored the Netflix or telephone modules yet (to-do list).

I also use the same mythtv box to support my family vanity domain (email/webhosting) via Apache/Postfix/Courier IMAP and NOW video surveillance!

Yes, I'm aware of Zone Minder. Original, I was going to replace Motion with it... In the end, I choose to go back to Motion as it was easier to implement than ZoneMinder.

I've played with motion and zoneminder. I have a zm system setup not but not really using it much. I havent decied to commit money to decent cameras.

i think motion does a much better job of detecting motion. I am getting lots of false motions with zm. The interface is nicer IMO but with lack of good detection, I end up with hours of false detected video.

There isn't really a need to add Motion to the menu. All one has to do is configure it and set it to start on boot.

Once motion is running, it captures 'events' as video and dumps them into /myth/video/motion...easily viewable via the frontend.

As a suggestion, one could obtain for about 200 bucks a four port switcher/combiner (I forget the model but can get it later) and simply manually program 30 minute records to cover the time window desired. Just feed it into the composite and KnoppMyth will do the recordings. Trick, if you set a record to start on a previous Saturday it will propagate for the complete cycle of 7days, also reboot every week and it will regenerate your schedule, forever? Set the bios for auto power recovery, or use a ups.

The combiner puts all four sources onto one screen so there would be no visual holes. With a 19 inch monitor it would look like four stacked 9" monitors that normal survaliance use.


Why 30 minute, easier to find a selected time slot and by setting the bit rate down a little, 30 minutes will fit on a cd with still a very good image. Simply pull the "pretty" file accross with samba and burn it on a windo$ box. 12 hours would need about 12~14 gig of storage space.

There are a couple of other little tricks needed, auto expire, set a number of files, and set the check method as Description.
