I just ran an auto upgrade on a new knoppmyth box. It had an old /myth in it from my previous box. The 2nd part of the installation (reboot, terminal asks for root password) was fine. I have a pvr-350 so i said yes to turning on the tv-output. Everything worked just fine, and the tv output was soild. I rebooted the computer after i was satisfied with the TV out. After reboot, X11 and GDM complain that /dev/fb0 does not exist. The pvr card is definitely detected. Thoughts?

Did you check the log files for issues with the IVTV drivers? Using the PVR-350 for output means it gets setup earlier than usual, which might mean that the hotplug stuff isn't running yet, and as a result the firmware isn't loading. The log files should make this obvious.

Also see this wiki page for some other diagnostics:

Finally, if you turned on boot splash it interacts poorly with the standard PVR-350 setup. You need to shuffle things around a bit to fix this. Searching here for "boot splash pvr fb0" should provide the details.

no luck with the config files. Its almost like the installation did not go all the way though, or didn't "stick". For instance, the tv output of the 350 definitely works, it just didn't work after I rebooted. Another problem is the time, since its suppose to do network time and even though theres an active network connection the time is still way off.

Hunt down posts by mjl that mention fb0. He's done a lot of testing and troubleshooting in this area.

BTW - You're not giving us much to go by here. No log extracts to examine, no exact messages that could be googled, ...

Hi,

The answer is in the forum, basicly edit the XF86Config-4 file and change the fb0 to be fb1 . The Boot splash grabs the first frame buffer (fb0) You should be able to turn boot splash off if preferred, edit lilo.conf and make vga=normal then run lilo -v followed with a reboot.

Do one or the other, not both.
Mike

Thanks mjl,

Your reply just fixed the problem I was having.

Maybe the installer that asks if you want the boot splash should warn you the fb will change when using a PVR-350 card.
Better yet, have the XF86Config-4 that is generated put the correct number in if using tv out on the 350.
