Alright,

Things are going pretty good with knoppmyth so far. I have learned a lot from everyone here, so thanks.

I would like to be able to get my mythweb going at work. Unfortunately, the only port that is open to do that is port 80. The problem is that my router appears to be using port 80. If I type <myexternalIP:80> It just brings me to the router main page, even after I setup port forwarding and the appachepd.config.

I am running R5C7, and I have confirmed a working mythweb outside of the workplace on port 8080. I just need help getting it to go on port 80 instead so I can use it at work. Thanks.

couple things...

you can probably change the port that the router is listening on...look for 'remote management setup'. change that port to a non-80 value then forward 80 request tot he mythbox.

Or...

I have the same issue as you. my company firewall only allows me to make the following outbound requests:
Code:
http on 80
https on 443
ssh on 22

Within the past couple weeks, mihanson has documented how to tunnel in:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10967

So if you can ssh into your box (need to open port 22 on router) you can tunnel in.

I tried that, my router is an Actiontec 701. Under the remote management screen it only gives me these options

Remote Management (On or Off)
Remote Telenet (On or Off)

I have both set to On. I cannot find a way to change the port anywhere. I did not want to go the Putty SSH tunnel route, because from what I understand, the remote computer MUST always use Putty to access mythweb. I do not want that restriction if I am out of town, or at a friends house. Thanks for the reply, any other ideas?

what is restricting you to port 80? Move the mythweb server to 8080 and setup you router to port forwarding (virtual server) to 8080 on your mythbox.

I see the Actiontec 701 calls it port forwarding...does this look familar? are you familar with port forwarding?

Then any where in the world you can access http://<externalIP>:8080 and access mythweb.

If you are like me and can not access a webserer on 8080 from work, then use a putty tunnel on your work PC...only that one pc need putty. setup a tunnel to map localhost:8080 to <internalIPof mythbox>:8080

Oh I gotcha. I do have it setup correctly to port forward 8080 on the router. Like I said, I thought that once you configured your setup through an SSH tunnel via Putty, that from that point forward you could only use putty to access mythweb. Guess I was wrong. Thank you very much for taking the time to help me through this!

no sweat.

Remember that the target of the tunnel is the LAN ip address of the mythbox, not the WAN side of the router. the tunnel gets you into the LAN, you can go anywhere on the LAN from there.
