I built my myth box using the Dragon specs and using SATA drive and works great but now I wanted to have more space and some redundancy. Does anyone have a good SATA raid contoller they have used. I have a Dell one that I tried and I can install just fine but then when it boot I get a kernal panic so I am guess knoppmyth doesn't have drivers for it. So I was looking for recomandations.

Thanks

you can't go wrong with 3ware. support for their ide raid cards has been in the kernel for years now since 2.2 I believe. They are a bit more expensive than a highpoint or promise, but they are worth the money, at least they have been in my experience.

Thanks for the advice. I was looking at the 3ware I see what you mean about being more expensive. You had also mentioned Highpoint are they also supported. I was thinking about using the highpoint if it was supported on my main backend server and then using a 3ware for my second backend server that would have lots of storage space. Because I have 4 drives and all the cards for 3ware are PCI-X I have already used my full PCI-X slot for my video card the highpoint 4 port card is PCI-X (4X) slot which I have an open one of those.

Thanks again for the help.

i think the next stable version of debian and debian installer will setup software raid in the installer and be a straightforward setup.

EVMS with BBR and lvm snapshots on top of raid1 may avoid the types of errors i had recently when my hard drive started going south.

Maybe that will give another option down the road but that would be a while.

point is software raid is really easy and you don't need a raid card so its cheap.
