Hi guys,

I am a totaly new in Linux but I am also totaly impressed by Mythtv. Because lack of Linux knowledge, knoppmyth is THE distrobution for me.

To make sure I buy hardware which will work without any troubles, I am wondering if the hardware listed below is a good choice. Could you guys please take a look to the hardware and tell me if I miss some important hardware and if this will result in a succesfull project?

512 MP PC6400 DDR2 CL5 (Kingston)
GigaByte GA-8I945GMH-RH
Hauppauge WinTV PVR-500MCE
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 300GB
Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop comfort
NEC ND-3550 16x (Dual-layer)
Silverstone SST-LC11M-S

This is based on hardware that is available in the shop now, but is this all supported by knoppmyth? Do you think I should change some hardware, because it is just a better choice?

Thanks for you help!

Regards,
Victor

What do you want to do with it?
Do you want to record and play HDTV?
Or just SD?
How will you connect to your TV?
Do you need digital audio (Coax or optical to a home theatre receiver)?

The wiki has a lot of information on this. See the following topic page:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=HardwareConfigs
Especially this overview:

I don't see any show stoppers in that list, although the CPU looks rather overpowered, and if you want to do HDTV eventually it might be better to have 1Mb of RAM. I would also double check that the kernel version (2.6.15) used in R5C7 supports your MoBo chipset.

Thank you all for your reactions and tips.

I want to watch tv, live pause, records programs, see the weather, rss, games, etc. Just the most common features of MythTV.

I will check the WIKI, I was not aware of this site!

Can you please clarify what you mean with R5C7 in my MoBo chipset??? Sorry, I am not an expert and I don't know what you are talking about. Can you please tell me what I have to check?

The Linux kernel version used is Linux 2.6.15. The chip set used on that motherboard is an Intel 945G with Intel ICH7 DH. Normally you want to do a little searching using those pieces of information to make sure you don't find major problems reported. Upgrading the kernel is a nusciance, especially if you're a newbie. ;-) Usually you can find something in the kernel change notes about "added support for i945G" or "fixed issue with DMA using i945G with ICH7".

Given the Intel chipset (when I tried to lookup the board before I had troubles with the Gigabyte website) you're probably fine, since they're pretty good about providing Linux drivers and information to the kernel developers.
