I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me on this one.
I just upgraded a old computer with the Viper MK8-939A motherboard it uses the follwing chip set:
Northbridge
VIA K8T890
Southbridge
VIA VT8237R
I also "upgraded" to a Sempron 3000 processor.
I had knoppmyth running before I upgraded the motherboard, so I know that my Nvidia card and other hardware is supported.
Well, after I booted up my system and it loaded the LiLo and right before the "desktop" would appear my screen started flashing white.
I assume that the chipsets are not supported yet. Does anyone know of a patch or other help how I could get my system back up and running?
I already tried to reinstall. I had no problem going through the initial menues but once I restart the same phenomenon. LiLo loads and the system goes through its normal boot process -- once the desktop is supposed to appear the screen starts flashing in white!!
Thanks for any help!!

I have spend all weekend researching this issue. I came across some post that had issues with a black screen after reboot. I tried downloading the latest nvidia driver and installing it, but than I noticed that it is already included in the new 5D1 release.
So I went ahead and downloaded it. Unfortunatly, I get the same result.
After I am prompted to remove the installation CD and reboot. The computer reboots and starts the LILO. Everything seems to be normal until the gnome gdm starts. I am left with a black screen after about a minute the black screen turns into a white flashing one.
Could anyone please direct me in the right direction on what else to do or what the problem could be.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

tjc,
Fist of al thanks for your help. I looked at the wiki entry related to balckscreen again. I have updated the XFree86 install to 4.6. The Nvidia driver is also the latest -8774.
I still get the black screen after I start gdm. Could it be that the Southbridge
VIA VT8237R chip is not yet supported?
My viper motherboard (see above) has PCI Express slots (they r not in use).
Would you have any other suggestions?
Thanks again for your help

1) You haven't said what kind of Nvidia video card you're using.
2) Have you tried one of the sample XF86Conf-4 files for Nvidia like this one?
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... X5200HowTo
3) Did you look at the log file? Unless you've done that, everything else is just blindly thrashing around.
The kernel used in the latest release is quite recent, so I wouldn't be all that worried about the southbridge unless you're seeing complaints about it in the logifiles. Especially the output of "dmesg".

TJC,
Thanks again for yor help.
I am using a Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 video card.
I have looked at the log files but honestly, I am not sure what exactly I am looking for. I did not see any obvious error messages
The only thing that was intersting to me is that I tried to use the F3 option during installation to create a custom XF86Config-4 file. Well, from playing with Ubuntu and some Nvidia binaries I knew that my video card uses the Device PCIID of 0x0326 which I was unable to locate while going through building the custome XF86Config-4 file.
I'll try the XF86Config-4 file you have posted above and c if that makes a difference.
Thanks again for all your help and I hope you have a great day

After playing long enough with the XF86Config-4 configuration I finally got it to work.
One last question. How do I enable gdm so it starts when I boot from HD?
Hope everyone has a great week and Thx again
