Hi folks.

I'm a newbie to linux and knoppmyth.

It gives me the pages of text, then the loading myth tv backend. Then it goes black.

The s-video cable is connected to the tv, and the monitor is hooked up to the monitor. I've hooked up the cable to the hauppage 250 tv in.

I just don't see the user interface. When I installed it, I went with auto install.

I've tried using escape and pressing the alt-2 and alt-S keys as described in http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... MytTVsetup but without any success. It stays blank.

I've been reading http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... WatchingTV but I can't even figure out how to boot up just into linux without it auto-loading mythtv so that I can look for the log files.

Any suggestions or ideas? I thought maybe the screen resolution the video card wanted wasn't liked, so I hooked up the tv. (I had that problem with the initial install. I had to use the fb800x600 option before going into the install otherwise I'd get scrambled video.)

I did not yet hook up a network cable to the computer. It tried to hit the nvidia site but it couldn't connect to download anything.

Doesn't seem to do anything.

Kudos on doing your research, but you're looking at the wrong troubleshooting page. The very first sentence on the page you linked to points you to the right one.

Also see these pages http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LinuxTips and http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=RemoteAccessfromWindows

Doh. I've had that page as well as 6 others up in my browser while I've been trying to figure this out.

I linked the wrong one when I meant to linkt he blankscreenafterinstall page.

But I think I've also managed to confuse myself while having too many open. I've been reading the wrong one while thinking I was on the right one. I'm old and confused. lol.

Thanks

Ok, I think I've borked the driver install.

What I'm gonna do is just run the network cable to that computer and rerun the autoinstall. I need to run the network cable regardless. I didn't before because I don't have a long enough cable that will reach. I have to run a line and snap some plugs on it. (At least that part I've gotten down. lol.)

I figure it will be easier to let the install figure out the drivers rather than try to go back and fix it. I wish I'd found the install instructions first. I just booted from the cd and assumed it wasn't necessary to find any instructions or hook up any cables.

My bad.

Thanks everyone.

Ok, I've gotten the network cable up and I believe running. Hard to tell without dragging another computer in there, but the light on the card and the light on the hub went on. The install was a lot quicker too, which makes me think the install was able to connect ok.

After the install, it had me remove the cd for rebooting. On bootup it went through the setting up processes, checked for video card settings, and then I think went into x-windows.

At this point it goes to a black screen. I never got to this step under auto install:
"2. After the initial installation is complete, the system will reboot into X, and KnoppMyth will open an Xterm window. When prompted, type the root password. "

I think what's happening is that X is using a video setting that my monitor doesn't like. I'm gonna go back and play with it some more and see if I run it using the TV option and just not use the monitor.

edit: ping works after I booted to the cd and quit using the menu.

So far no luck. I moved the monitor from my primary computer to that box, and had the same result.

I did catch the message, during the install, that it was disabling the other output. I also saw something about being unable to resolve the nvidia adress for some .run file.

ping connects to nvidia though, so I'm guessing I need to manually download and install the nvidia drivers. I was really hoping not to have to do that, as I don't know linux.

Not to worry. It's mind numbingly easy. Search for examples that use wget. The curent driver version is 1.0-8774. You may actually want to wait a few more hours for Cecil's announcement of R5D1 since that will install the newer drivers natively.

I'll do that, thanks.

The torrent is up (see - http://www.mysettopbox.tv/), but I think Cecil is either waiting for all the mirrors to catch up before posting an announcement here, or work (Like Dread Cthulhu) has eaten his head again.

I posted a similar story on another thread, if you have both the monitor and tv hoooked up, try unhooking the monitor and booting with only the tv connected via s-video. I ran into the same thing where the splash screen came up showing the front end loading. as soon as it finished loading it would go to a black screen. I unhooked the monitor, rebooted the myth box; and viola
