I am building a Myth box and need a little help. My TV has a DVI input and I would like to test it out. The only thing I'm not sure of is what video cards work with HDTVs with DVI inputs. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have a video card with DVI. I don't have an HDTV w/ DVI. I'd assume any video card w/ DVI out can output to any HDTV w/ DVI in... Please consult the manual for your TV.

I have a Geforce FX5700 ultra w/DVI...

There is a bit of an issue using pc/DVI and HDTV/DVI together. That is televisions and pc monitors handle displaying things differently. TVs are setup for overscan which essentially means you hook up your pc to tv and you lose part of your desktop. PC displays run with no overscan to get the most available desktop realestate.

your best option is to use a transcoder. this device takes the vga output and changes the color info to work with your tv. Note in order to use this you will need to have component video in. most hd sets have this.

I wouldn't neccesarily say that the best option is using a transcoder and component inputs that is a conversion to analog then a conversion to component. with DVI it is digital all the way. your picture should be much more pure with DVI, however you may run into the overscan stuff I'm not sure never used DVI to HDTV.

please dont assume ! you can cost a user his money for the video card

You will get overscan... it is inherent in the design of the systems in use. Televisions expect overscan, this makes it so the broadcasters don't have to have the images perfectly centered on the screen.

PC/DVI->HDTV/DVI is purely digital you are correct but the resolutions don't match up perfectly. I have done a great deal of research on the subject and have myself tried the DVI->DVI connection, again with overscan and out of sync ranges.

The sync thing has me a bit out of sorts as DVI is supposed to be a PNP technology. The way it is supposed to work is that each device has a table of supported res/sync and they use the highest one supported by both.

At least with the transcoder you can setup the Xconfig as needed and just pipe it out the vga port and still have it be a HD quality signal.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really dont want to mess with a transcoder, I have enaough stuff hooked up as it is and I kind of like getting the more difficult things working. I have done some more research and it seems that most people who have tried it with newer Nvidia cards are more successful that with other cards, so I am going to try it with an FX5200 and see what happens. I really wish someone made a video card for htpc's that had DVI and/or component out.

well if you run windows the newer ati all in wonders hae a component dongle that supposedly works great, however they haven't put support for it in their linux drivers and won't release the specs to the opensource guys to add to the dri drivers.
