Manually inserting the driver was one of the first things I tried and it didn't solve my problem. However, if it does work for you, then the way to fix it is to add ivtv-fb to the list of modules in '/etc/modules'. In some previous versions of Knoppmyth, I had to do that to make the 350's tv-out work. I haven't had to do that for the last couple of releases though, and it definitely doesn't solve this current problem (at least for me).

Are you seeing anything in either /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog? similar to this?:

Code:
Aug 30 14:26:45 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: Framebuffer module loaded (attached to ivtv card id 0)
Aug 30 14:26:45 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: screen coords: [0 0] -> [720 480]
Aug 30 14:26:45 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: original global alpha = 208
Aug 30 14:26:45 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: current OSD state = 39
Aug 30 14:26:46 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: new global alpha = 208 (1 255 0)
Aug 30 14:26:46 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: framebuffer at 0xf1510000, mapped to 0xda010000, size 1665k
Aug 30 14:26:46 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: mode is 720x480x32, linelength=2880
Aug 30 14:26:46 mythtv kernel: ivtv0-osd: fb1: cx23415 TV out frame buffer device
Aug 30 14:26:46 mythtv kernel: ivtv0: Allocate DMA decoder OSD stream: 16 x 65536 buffers (1024KB total)

If not, then the module load is not working. Try just:

Code:
/sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb

from the commandline (as root) and see what happens. if you don't get any errors, then tail the above mentioned log files.

I did try this before trying my hack, but I was getting errors when ivtv was trying to load the firmware. I'll try again and see what happens.

Hi,

I also have been up and down the road the get tv out of the 350. Installs, upgrades, no matter it fails after the reboot.

On the monitor all is well and as was mentioned earlier and I agree, it has to be something simple because it works great, ... until reboot. I have tried all the dumb tricks from the way-back era and nothing kicks in. Makes me suspect that something is loaded on the first boot that is dumped / over written / not added to the normal run shopping list however stays in memory. Therefore works, until memory is cleared.

I haven't had the time to make a list of all the modules, mem size, and any other item before doing the reboot then compare for a difference to see if there is a clue thrown out to us.

I am sure if some one spots something, those with a whole lot more skill than I have, will show us the way :)

It is still a great day!
Mike

Hello.

I am glad to hear I am not to only one running into this problem. I thought I was going insane last night when it stopped working after a reboot.

Thanks to those of you who have been posting alternative ideas and 'hacks'. I have tried them but no luck on my side. (BTW I do not have the bootsplash enabled)

If anyone else has some ideas I am happy to hear them.

Thanks.

Hi everybody,

Same problem here when I go to install D1

Don't know if there is anything to it but the exact same thing would happen when I installed C7 when I choose the i686 module during setup. So I went with the default module and it ran like a champ (no bootsplash of course)

Thanking everybody for all the input !

Hello,
I have got the same issue. For me it seems to be a problem with the ivtv-fb driver
When I try to load it it says it is allready there. However there is no information in messages.log
If you remove it form ivtv modules and start it manualy it stops the system.

Here the system (frondend) stops

The next line as in R5C7 installation should show the initialisation of the dev/fb device

Maybe that helps some one as I am not a linux specialist

I still haven't had any luck fixing this problem. I tried looking at the modules loaded at different points before and after install and reboot. I haven't come up with anything apart from the obvious that the ivtv_fb module doesn't load after the first reboot. Here's the output from lsmod that I looked. Perhaps someone else will notice something I've missed.

Something else I've noticed. If I install and do not setup the bootsplash, then later when I try to manually insert ivtv-fb, I get a seg fault and the system hard freezes. With the bootsplash installed, I don't get the seg fault.

Hope we figure this out soon.

Section "Device"
Identifier "Hauppauge PVR 350 iTVC15 Framebuffer"
Driver "ivtvdev"

### change fb0 to whatever number you got in the previous section
Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb1"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "XVideo" "1"

### change the busid to whatever is reported by lspci. Note that
### output of lspci is hex, so add a preceding "0x" to the BusID
BusID "PCI:2:13:0"

Screen 0
EndSection

The section of importance here is:
Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb1"

If I remember right, it use to be
Option "ivtvdev" "/dev/fb1"

Once I changed the device from ivtvdev to fbdev, it worked for me. Also, make sure you have the ivtv-fb module loaded.

unclemike, I tried your suggestion but to no avail. I'm still getting the same error message as before:

(II) IVTVDEV_TST: driver for framebuffer: PVR-350
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(--) Chipset PVR-350 found
(EE) ivtvHWProvbe failed to do IVTVFB_IOCTL_GET_STATE for device (null)
(EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.
(EE) Device(s) detected, but none match those in the config file.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

This is a tough one.

is there an absolute fix for this yet?

r5d1 is sweet, it got my cn400 chipset working, but now i can't use it on my tv. :(

on the first install tv out displays the tv image to the tv but the gui to my monitor.....after a reboot nothing works!!

i tried the fix mentioned above and all it produced was a crash.

To my knowledge, no there isn't a fix (God knows I've looked!).

Based on what I read, the problem stems from an updated ivtv driver that is incompatable with certain Hauppauge chipsets. Some work, some don't. All the KM gurus are aware/working on it (mjl - Thanks so much!)

Once there is a fix, and I'm sure there will be, I'm sure there will be a sticky set up for it. For now, we all have to be patient (unless you are a linux/KM genius, then good luck).

Are they (mjl and whoever else) looking for specific information from those of us afflicted? Maybe to help track down the common threads? Like chipset, etc..

Thanks!

Hi,

Don't look at me when you say guru... I am still learning just as many are :)

I did notice but have not had the chance to play further, however typically fb0 is used for the splash screen which then would force the 350 to use fb1.. Because of the previous issue with fb and the 350, I was lazy and skipped the splash option and left it off.

Earlier it was mentioned that a simple modprobe fixed it for him. Looking at the listing posted I see:
Quote:
Option "ivtv" "/dev/fb1"
and also
Quote:
Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb1"

If some one would like to try some things.. In an earlier version enabling boot splash required fb0 to be changed to fb1 in the XF file. Notice in the quote fb1, therefore was boot splash selected? If so then the frame buffer should have been loaded and the XF86Config-4 was properly programmed to move to fb1 and the change of fbdev was the cure. Again in theory, if fb is 0 then a /sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb in the bootmisc.sh may be the trick.

I will try this myself this weekend when the time permits. Good hunting :)
Mike
