When I hit the volume change buttons on my remote, I see a meter come up and the bar changes. But wether it's set to 0 or 100, it doesn't make any difference in the volume. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Which application inside KnoppMyth is giving this result? Live tv watching? Recorded programs watching? DVD watching? Imported Videos watching?

I wonder if the keyboard volume keys work ok for volume control? That might help narrow down the problem. If the keyboard volume keys work and the IR remote keys don't, that gives you a place to start looking.

I get the same result everywhere. If I press a volume change key, the OSD pops up and shows the volume bar changing, but the volume coming out of the speakers stays constant. Not sure that I've tried the keyboard vol keys, but like I said, it doesn't appear to be a lirc issue.

You've probably got it configured to control the wrong audio device in the setup, or have the output plugged into the wrong connection. Since you haven't told us how you have your settings are configured or the audio output is connected that's my best guess.

I don't recall specifying anything about which audio device to control. Right now I have a cable plugged into my sound card output that converts it to RCA jacks. How would I check what device the volume is controlling?

The reason I didn't give any info is because I don't know where to start troubleshooting the problem.

Time for a tour of the setup screens. From the Main menu on the GUI:

Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> General -> 3rd screen

Is a good place to start. There are a couple other places to look at but this is the main one. While you're in there take a few minutes and go through all the configuration screens, even if you don't chnage anthing, it's amazingly useful to remember that "oh yeah, there's a setting for that around here somewhere".

Also which "soundcard/builtin" output are you plugged into? The basic light/bright green 2.0/2.1 stereo output?

Okay, I looked at the sound settings and nothing jumped out at me. There was something about indivual sound controls(I think). Should that be checked?

My sound controls work fine in R5D1 and my settings on the sound setup screen are as follows:

audio output device: /dev/dsp
use internal volume controls - checked
Mixer device: /dev/mixer
mixer controls: PCM
independant muting of right and left audio channels - unchecked

I just looked up your MSI K8NGM2 motherboard. There are several versions of that board and each one has a different audio chip on it. Perhaps your audio chip isn't supported properly in the current ALSA sound drivers yet?

Dunno. I did have to upgrade the drivers to v12. The sound comes out fine, it jus' doesn't change the voluem.

neutron68 is on the right track here. You should have internal volume control selected (unless you're using SPDIF) but you may have to chnage the mixer device name or the output controlled by the mixer. "Master" is probably the next thing to try. With bleeding edge hardware you're going to have to do some exploring to figure this out.

If you're worried about "breaking something" make a backup then you can fiddle away to your hearts content and restore if you roach it. Try not to have more or less recordings around when you restore or things get a bit messy (test with live TV and clean up after yourself).

Not too worried 'bout losin' my recordings. I put the expendable ones on the myth box. My tivo has all the ones I don't wanna lose.

I'll try changin' the sound settings an' let ya know what happens.

Welp, I changed the settings so the buttons control the master volume instead of the PCM an' that works. But it's weird because the PCM volume setting doesn't do anything. No matter where it's set, nothing changes. Anybody else seen that?

It's because it's falling back to the Intel i810 "least common denominator" AC'97 behaviour, which only has two volumes for the PCM, on and off. I think I was just explaining this to someone in another thread earlier this weekend...

-nods- I saw where you mentioned that. However, I don't even have on/off functionality from the PCM.
