Hi all,

Im considering turning my "old" pc into a Myth box.

I have been skimming the forums, and got the idea that KnoppMyth is not that reliable if you want to start running extra apps on the PC.

I would like to run knoppMyth, and in addition I would like to install a bittorrent client(azureus), set up some samba shares, ftp, webserver, itunes/mp3 sharing.

Would I be best with KnoppMyth, or shall i install MythTV on Ubuntu? As i'm not wanting to add too much, i thought KnoppMyth may be best?

Also a few "noob" questions while im here -

- Does the Remote for the Hauppage Nova-T work with KnoppMyth?

- How is the wifi support? I would like to put in a wifi card and then play movies on MythTV that are being sent from another PC on the network, how well would that go?

- Any reccomendations on nice looking, albeit cheap, HTPC cases? (I was lookin at the Coolermaster CM 260)

- Surround sound: I have coaxial SPDIF on my mobo, will it work? im rather fond of my surround setup.

Thansk!

I havent done the torrent thing with KnoppMyth, but I have it set up using samba to import my music folder to my other systems, ergo, using any computer I have access to my music.

In addition, I have my wallpapers stored on my knoppmyth system, and they too are available for network use.

I do know, that there is a plug-in available for KnoppMyth for torrents. To what extent, I dont know, as I havent looked at it.

So all in all, I think KnoppMyth would work for you, and if samba is set up properly, you wont have to think twice about it.

I turned my 4 years old pc into a Mythbox connected to a TV and a network

In addition to the obvious PVR/Media center functions, I use azureus and have samba sharing video, music, photos and generic network space available on my winXP notebook; the pc functions (azureus in particular) are remotely managed from the Win notebook via VNC and eventually putty. The PVR/media center functions are managed via TV and ATI usb remote

I am basically a linux beginner; with the help of the wiki all these things may be done with some but not too much effort.

Cool - that sounds like what I am going to do. I've got about 7 years Linux experience, so should be ok on that front.

Remember aside from the folks who are answering questions, or posting Tier 1 and Tier 2 hardware recommendations, or asking about a given piece/set of hardware, you're going to see a skewed sample of postings from folks who've run into some kind of issue here in the forums. That's just the nature of the beast given that this is the primary source for KM support.

Not only that, I'd guess that at least half of the problem postings are folks who have simple configuration or do-it-yourself hardware issues. Bad TZ setting, wrong frequency set, screwy cabling or connections, out of date drivers or firmware, ...

I only have about 3-4 years of experience with Linux, so take that into account when listening to any advice I offer.
I currently use Ubuntu on my laptop and desktop and Knoppmyth on my pvr. Knoppmyth is a pretty easy install and works pretty well "out-of-the-box." I tried about 2 months ago to switch my pvr to Ubuntu + myth because of the limitations on upgrading when using Knoppmyth (though I think they're working on that). Even with a how-to I couldn't get the Ubuntu + Myth to work at all. After giving up I had a new version of Knoppmyth running within 4 hours.
I'm using well supported hardware. I think the problem with Ubuntu was lirc.
