I previously had R5C7 installed on my HTPC box. The picture coming from my PVR-500 (the Samsung TCPN 2121P30A variety) wasn't crystal clear, but it was tolerable after upgrading ivtv to 0.4.6. When R5D1 came out, I followed the upgrade instructions, but later decided to just do a fresh install. The picture is now worse than before. I've tried horsing around with the recording profiles, as well as editing /etc/modprobe.conf to make it think that I had a type 50 tuner. I haven't made any rookie mistakes (that I can think of) like with bad/poorly connected cables and the like. Any other suggestions?

If you have any saved recordings, you can look at an old recording to see if it looks ok. If so, then it's got to do with your current RECORDING situation. If not, it's got to do with your current PLAYBACK situation.

From plain install of knoppmyth R5D1 you'll just need to "cd /usr/src" then "tar xvfj kernel-source*" for his instructions to work.

So use a DVD or other canned recording of a known quality. After that see the picture quality troubleshooting guide on the wiki.

Having done some tinkering, everything is looking good except for channel 2. This channel looks fine on the line that goes straight to the tv but has a lot of noise on the MythTV side. I'm not doing anything silly like using cheap cables or cascading splitters. Additionally, I'm using a Monster power strip that grounds my cable line and the Motorola Signal Booster. I tried using denoise3d and denoise3d=12 (BTW, I'm not really sure what the difference is) but it wasn't worth the hit on my processor. Any pointers?

You haven't got anything else in the circuit (a vcr, cable box, ...) that uses that channel to rebroadcast it's output have you? Even if it's only taking an input from the same coax, or power from the same outlet?

Have you tried fiddling with the fine tuning values in the channel editor to see if it's just a minor frequency issue?

I'm looking at the mythweb configure channels screen. What should I enter for the finetuning values? Or rather, how do I arrive at the best value?

Okay, I entered "100" and that seemed to clean it up quite a bit. Stupid question: is there a way to automatically fine tune each channel?
