I managed to get R5D1 installed and working propperly for the most part, but my video playback is less than stellar when using MythVideo. First off, mplayer wouldn't work using "-vo xv" as the output option, xine worked, but was super jumpy, skipping frames all over the place, and using "Internal" as the playback option works, but is still fairly jumpy. Could this just be a simple matter of graphics card drivers not being installed? I have an ATI Radeon 9600 pro connected through svideo.

Were there any errors or warnings in ~/.xsession-errors

Again, check for errors in the above file.

Yes, very likely. If there aren't XVMC or XV drivers, then Xine/mplayer/MythnTV will not be able to use any hardware accelleration, which is very slow.

checking in .xsession-errors reveals that video drivers are indeed the problem:

It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.

If I attempt installing propper radeo drivers for X will this fix the problem, or do I have to do some crazy cabbage with mplayer?

The proper drivers will fix it, but I have no experience of the Radeon stuff. My advice is to search (this Forum, the whole 'Net) first. It may save a lot of wasted time.

Ofter procrastinating profusely for the past while, I'm giving this another attempt. It seems that the drivers from ATI are only supposed to support XFree86 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3, where as I have 4.5 installed, should these drivers still work, or would I be better off to downgrade, or switch to X.org? I got the installer to work telling it I was using 4.3, but I still can't seem to get xv working. Although it is possible this is a config issue also. Any advice?

What xv issues are you running into? It sounds like I'm in the exact same boat ... everything works, but it is choppy without Xv, and the screen is stretched vertically with Xv.

Other than the Xv issue, I haven't seen any problems using the XFree86 4.3 drivers ... but then again, I don't have a 'working' system running yet, either.

After some deep searching, It appears that the Xv bug has been present in the ATI drivers in every version after 8.20.8 (ie. 8.20.8 is the last known working version.)

If you can downgrade to the 8.20.8 drivers, this may take care of the Xv issues ... unfortunately, this release has a kernel module compile error when attempted against the 2.6.17-chw-8 kernel (ie. the most current version of Knoppmyth).

So it looks like it's a) get a different card, or b) use an earlier version of knoppmyth/ati drivers.
