I'm running R5D1, which includes IVTV 0.7.0. I noticed that a new version of the driver is out -- 0.7.1. Has anyone out there tried it yet and have any feedback?

I'm thinking of trying it out because I am getting a large number of errors in the mpeg files. It doesn't cause any problems when playing back using the myth front end or mplayer, but the errors do cause numerous video "glitches" when I use VLC to play a video.

Thanks!

Marc

i'm using it now. i had to upgrade it in order to get my pvr350 to work. there is also a version0.8.0 available out there, but i read it breaks r5d1.

i don't really know what's different between the versions except that 0.7.1 got my computer working again.

Timmayk, thanks for the info. IVTV version 0.8.0 is for a different version of the kernel than is bundled with r5d1 and should cannot be used with an R5D1 install.

Edited on 10/7/06 to remove reference to outdated install instructions. For instruction on how to install updated ivtv drivers, look in the wiki at http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CompileIvtv

Works well (I've been using it since the 9/27 when I updated the wiki instructions), seems to fix problems for a number of people. (Which reminds me that I need to go bug Quigs to see if he ever tried it and if it helped him...)

I've done the ugprade and things are working, although it didn't solve the problem with VLC complaining about errors in the mpeg stream. The guys in the VLC forum are the one's that said it was a problem with errors in the mpeg file, but given that I've found 3 other player that seem to be able to handle these files without problems, I'm starting to wonder about their conclusion...

Question -- is step 11 ("11. After the system comes back up you will need to drop and recreate your cards definitions in mythtv-setup.") required when one is moving from 0.7.0 to 0.7.1, or is this more of an issue when one is moving up to the 0.7.x series for the first time? Thanks!

Step 11 is not needed for the 0.7.0 to 0.7.1 transition.

So I've done three reccordings on 0.7.1. WHile I haven't watch them eng-to-end my impression is that the closed-captioning works much better. Under 0.7.0 it was common for the CC to sometimes flash on the screen for a fraction of a second -- too short to read. Under 0.7.1 this problem seems to be gone. My original assumption was that the issue was the player not dealing with CC properly, but perhaps the problem was with the recording. After we've watched a few more shows I'll do another update.

TJC, I tweaked your notes in the wiki to reflect that step 11 can be skipped when upgrading to 0.7.1 on an R5D1 install. I just added the words "...and step 11." to the next-to-last sentence, so here is what's there now:

Quote:
Substituting the appropriate versions these instructions work for upgrading R5Dx to 0.7.1, however, with 0.7.1 you must skip step 4. The firmware and module setup in R5Dx should already be the current as well, so you can actually skip steps 4 through 9 inclusive and step 11. Also remember that 0.7.1 is only compatible with kernel 2.6.17. - tjc

I believe what I have added is correct, but let me know if you feel it is unclear or incorrect.

Were you able to install 0.7.1 using the "howto" in this forum ( http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=223 ) or did you do something different. The "howto" post is from 2003, so just double-checking that nothing has changed.

Marc

sorry for the delayed response. i used this forum thread for guidance: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... 1&start=60

Just a couple cautions for the next set of folks to come along:

- Don't use 0.8.0 with the 2.6.17 kernel that ships with R5D1, the folks at the Ivtv web site are quite explicit about this - http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Main_Page

- The referenced posting (223) is really old. Please use the ivtv update instruction on the wiki which are kept up to date - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CompileIvtv

Interestingly enough, upgrading to 0.8.0 (and kernel 2.6.18 ) finally allows me to use closed captioning on my PVR 500 8)
