Ok, installed R5D1 but had to use failsafe since anything else gave me a blank screen on my video card... Rebooted & as soon as X started up the system did a hard boot.

Finally was able to disable gdm & boot to run level 3 successfully. Fiddling with the "nvidia" driver gave me no luck but vesa and nv drivers worked fine...

Now I am using "nv" with load glx enabled and I see the following in /var/log/XFree86.0.log --

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
        compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.8774
        Module class: X.Org Server Extension
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.1
(II) Loading extension GLX

No errors related to GLX, does this mean GLX is working? And if not, does anyone have any suggestions on fixing my hard boot problem with the "nvidia" driver? I even went so far as to download the driver from nvidia and ran NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8774-pkg1.run manually to try and get it working.

Computer is an old POS Compaq Presario 5310US 1.2 gig celeron with 512 ram. Everything seems quite stable except when I try running X with the nvidia driver...

edit:
Giving nvidia 7676 drivers a try now, we'll see how it goes.

Ok, its definitely NOT GLX with this config. And still rebooting when I start x with the nvidia driver enabled. :( No joy on the 7676 drivers either, compile failed on those.

I have a MX440, but haven't had any problems with it. I am using the nVidia drivers, all the versions I've tried while using Knoppmyth have worked fine.
Maybe the card is faulty.

Well, I think the card itself is probably fine, I ran across some mention of issues with onboard intel graphics chipsets causing crashes with nvidia agp cards. The fix I found was to disable and blacklist the kernel agp drivers (agpgart & intel_agp) and set the nvidia driver to use nvidia agp, but that didn't work since if the kernel agp drivers are disabled the nvidia module won't load... :(

I'm curious if anyone has had any luck using the nvidia agp drivers by setting
Code:
Option         "NvAgp" "1"
in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Maybe I'm just doing it all wrong.
