I have been running my knoppmyth box with an old Ti4600 I robbed from my old desktop PC, and it's been working fine. I use the s-video out to go to my TV. Recently, the fan on the video card has started making noises. I have an even older 32mb ATI Rage Pro (I think that's the model?) that also has s-video out, and is fanless.

Would I be able to take the Ti4600 out, put the ATI in, boot up, and not have any problems? If I need to chagne something or rerun something, what would that be? I'm able to ssh into the box, so I could do something via that if I need to. Thanks!

Oh, and a somewhat related question - what's the max resolution I can run with s-video? I never changed anything from the defaults, so I think it's running at 800x600. I've got an HDTV....would I be able to set the resolution to match that, so I could at least run things widescreen or something? That's not as important right now as being able to switch the cards out, though. Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

Okaaaaaaay. I swapped them, and I get an x server error. Guess that answers that. Now, on to find out what I can edit (what config would I even look at?) to get the ATI card to work...

The file your going to need to edit is:

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

It should not be too painful getting your ATI Rage Pro to work.

Google around a bit. Your going to want to replace the "device" sections
in in your XF86Config-4.

Maybe someone around here is using an ATI Rage Pro S-Video out and
can give you sections you need...

There are several recent threads about getting the ATI video cards to work. A search of the forums (try "ati" and "video" as search terms) should turn up two or three within the last 2 weeks.

Hi,

Why not peel the the cover off of the center of the fan, add a couple drops of sewing machine oil and go for a couple more years?

The ati rage card may work with a nvidia driver or an ati driver. It will work with vesa but not sure about tv out.

Hrm, well, I edited the file, saved it, restarted gdm and x, didn't work, opened the file, something had changed the values to something else that I didn't put in, restarted again, and it actually came up and seems to be working!

I'm noticing a slight wobble effect at the top of the screen, and I swear the first time I played something back it seemed like it was slower than normal, and the sound seemed to be dragging, but I paused it and when I hit play it seemed alright. :-/ 32MB should be enough for playback, right? It's just at 800x600 I think....you'd think that'd be able to handle it. Any more ideas or anything I might have missed? Thanks everyone for all the help!
