I am looking at either two (2) Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 or one (1) Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 500. I was wondering if there is any advantage to using two tuner cards over the single double tuner card? The priceing is close to each other when all things are factored in so that is not a big factor.

My PVR-500 works great. The only drawback to the PVR-500 package is that it doesn't come with a remote but you appear to have that covered. The PVR-500 is after all basically two PVR-150's on one PCI card.

Save the PCI slot and go with the PVR-500 if you want two tuners. Mine worked perfectly right out of the box.

edit: I seem to recall that the tuner chip was changed on some of the newer PVR-500's. Not sure if that applies to the PVR-150's. I believe you can still get a PVR-500 working even with the new tuner but you will probably need to update your ivtv drivers. If you confortable with a "tier 2" install than it's probably still worth saving the PCI slot but if you wan it to "just work" than do your homework.

I jus' saw that you're tryin' to use the Tivo remote. Have you used it elsewhere? AFAIK, you'd have to build an IR reciever an' figure out what IR codes it was sending. You're prolly better off getting a Snapstream remote. Or you could go with two 150's, one with the remote, and one without. Or if you really wanna be extravagent, a 150 with remote an' a 500. The only issue is how many PCI slots you have.

I am planning on building a custom IR reciever (putting my soldering skills to the test). I was able to find the LIRC code over at LIRC(dot)ORG. Someone has already made the file needed so at least I will have something to work with.

I am planning in the future to get the Harmony 550 from Logitech so I can control everything. When this time comes I will have to set up my own file, but I will wait until the time comes.

Hey Spideyk21, I built the custom IR reciever from the schematic at lirc(dot)com and it works great. I had to use irrecord to create my own file though as nobody else had created one for the Onkyo remote that came with my receiver. The Onkyo remote was able to control all my other home theatre equipment so I decided to go all out and make it work with my Myth box. It took a little trial and error but it works great now.

This will work with the default key bindings. It is set for the #2 slot on the remote (set switch to 1 or 2, press tivo and pause together until light stays on, then press 2) I am still refining it. With some tweaks I think I can get the tivo button to goto the menu of programs and then the main screen just like tivo. This file does not support the dvd menu nav but I am working on it.
