Hi everyone,

My DVD player is really loud when it spins ... I found this post:

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... eed+hdparm

suggesting: hdparm -E (speed) /dev/dvd/ (or ./hdc etc).

I have tried this with /dev/dvd, /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc, /dev/cdrom, /dev/cdrom1 - which are all mostly the same thing on my machine (I do have two dvd players in the box). Nothing seems to make any difference. I also added lines to the hdparm.conf as per the post.

Does everyone else just deal with the really loud noise or is there something simple that I am missing? Is my box maybe just a bad one for this?

BTW I also found the settings in Xine where there is a CDRom speed and changed that to no avail ...

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!
John

After a lot of searching, it appears that hdparm -E doesn't always affect combo-drives (CD/DVD). I have seen some people have success with this while using DVDRom only drives, and for others the command appears to work with their combo drives but only on CDRoms inserted and not DVDs.

For the record, I also tried setting the "keepsettings" value to on (-k option of HDparm) thinking that maybe this would prevent the drive from automatically changing the speed but this did not apear to work.

Ok ... Found it: (This worked for me: R5C7, NEC3550A)

the link:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=181008

Summary :

basically download a this "speed control program":

as root:

wget http://noto.de/speed/speedcontrol.c

compile:

gcc -o speedcontrol speedcontrol.c

then set your speed:

./speedcontrol -x1 /dev/hcd (or whatever your drive is)

Enjoy your quiet movies!
