I am trying to get my RT61 wifi card working flawlessly in KnoppMyth and it has problems with SMP and PreEmpt, which just so happen to be enabled on the default kernel. The how-to is a bit outdated, and I was wondering if someone could walk me through it, or if anyone with this card has found an alternate way, maybe ndiswrapper.

A search should turn up the details both here and on the wiki. See the http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=KernelUpgradeHowTo or the like for more details.

I put something in the howto section:

still a little dated.

That is what I was saying, the how-to is there, but it is a bit old and when I tried following it, many things broke.

post some details and I'll see if I can get you through it.

did you modify the "EXTRAVERSION =" line in the kernel Makefile so that it won't overwrite your old modules?

Well for one, I don't know if all the required sources are included in R5D1, and that is a big snag.

Okay I've figured out everything, just needed to download the ivtv and lirc sources myself. Alls fine now.

When I tried to recompile the kernel in R5D1 the module that handles the PCHDTV 5500 stopped working. Not sure why.

You must recompile the module for the new kernel. Just re-do the whole ./configure, make, make install process for any extra modules you installed.
