I have installed KnoppMyth R5D1 on a 20GB HD but I have a problem with live TV broadcasts (I'm in Sydney, Australia), the video is fine but there is no sound. However elsewhere within Mythtv I get sound OK (e.g. BBC World Service radio and oddly in NASA TV I get sound but no video).

I know this is not a hardware problem because I have a MEPIS 6.0 install on another HD that I swap over into the same computer (i.e. same hardware) and on MEPIS I can watch the Sydney TV with video and sound OK using kdetv and everything works fine.

So there are some config settings within Mythtv that need changing but I have no idea which ones. I would be grateful for any help that would get me sound in live TV (and video in NASA TV)

Any ideas??

Can you list your hardware? Do you have multiple sound cards, including an onboard sound board?

If you record a program and watch it, does it get sound?

If you record a program and play it on another machine, will it play sound?

If you hook up the cable or dish directly to your tv, sound plays? (just to make sure that sound is coming in on the signal.)

There are some threads on sound already that might help you. Do a search on sound.

OK, my hardware consists of a VIA 82xx onboard sound chip and a SAA7134 tv tuner card. I should probably explain my MEPIS 6.0 install on exactly the same hardware (all I do is swap over the hard disks). In MEPIS I can watch TV using kdetv with video and sound both OK which shows that the signal going into the tv tuner card is carrying both video and sound. On MEPIS, the command

cat /proc/asound/cards

show the following;

richardw2@1[~]$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [V8235 ]: VIA8233 - VIA 8235
VIA 8235 with ALC650F at 0xdc00, irq 209
1 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
MPU-401 UART at 0x330, irq 10
2 [SAA7134 ]: SAA7134 - SAA7134
saa7134[0] at 0xe2002000 irq 201
richardw2@1[~]$

In the MEPIS /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file there is an entry that installs the SAA tv tuner card module.

Now, going back to KnoppMyth, the cat /proc/asound/cards command shows only one entry (card0 = the VIA chip), the SAA tv tuner card is not listed. This is despite the fact that while the computer is booting up I see a message that saa7134 is loaded. Also the KnoppMyth alsa-base file does NOT have an entry that installs the SAA tv tiner card.

All I could think of was to run the command;

modprobe saa7134_alsa

This did result in the cat /proc/asound/cards command now showing two entries;

card0 = the VIA chip and
card1 = the SAA tv tuner card

However, this did NOT solve my problem. TV still had no sound.

So the problem seems to be with the way KnoppMyth detects and loads the SAA7134 module, the video works but the sound part does not get installed in alsa.

By the way, recordings are the same as live TV, i.e. no sound

I understand that via chips are more difficult to use. I think it they are listed in hardware to avoid. I'd check there and see if the chips match. It's not that they won't work, but just that you have to play with it a bit.

Also, I remember reading some issues about mythtv's volume being set at lowest sometimes, which results in no sound for recordings. There's a program you can run in xterm to show the settings, but I can't remember the name.

I'd read it in the last week or two though, on another sound thread.

Just came across it. alsamixer. Run it and see if mute is set.

I found the solution to this problem on the following page;

http://www.wlug.org.nz/TvTunerCards

as follows;

Quote:
If you find you get video but no sound the following command may be useful as some tv applications don't unmute this card properly (ie mythtv).

assuming your V4L device is /dev/video0

/usr/bin/v4lctl -c /dev/video0 volume mute off

My only problem now is that I need to run this command every time I boot up KnoppMyth. The linux files that are usually used to automatically run commands after bootup (e.g. rc.local or local.start) do not seem to exist in knoppMyth, so i would be grateful if someone could tell me how to configure KnoppMyth so that the above command is run automatically after each boot up.

Check out this thread:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... =alsasound

It has a bunch of different solutions people have used. One should do the trick.
