Sorry for getting so off-topic but here's another general question... if component video is so much better than s-video, how did s-video get a foothold in the market? Why even use s-video, ever?

You are really straying from the topic of this thread (and the whole forum).

Component is "better" then s-video because it allows for more signal fidelity by offering multiple chroma (color space) channels. But the vast majority of standard definition TV's use s-video type signals internally (that is one luminosity channel and one chroma channel).

So there is very little to be gained by using component signaling over s-video on a standard TV. High and extended definition TV's can benefit from component signaling.
