Hi,

Thanks bigbro, only had a moment to send a quick note so I guess it was bit too cryptic. Yes, alt key plus the x key to open an xterm window. Then at the mythtv user prompt:
$ alsamixer

use the arrow keys to move across the items and the up/dwn arrow keys to raise / lower I find a good starting point is about 94. You will need at least master and pcm however on some it may require a couple of other items to be uMuted. the m key toggles the muting.

If you start a cd or other tune playing, then open the xterm, you will know imediately when you have the correct combination :)

$ amixer doesn't work either that produces a

-bash $: command not found

anyway I discovered that Myth thinks I have AD1885 sound chips which I understand doesn't work with linux. but I've also seen in it reported in lsmod | grep snd as intel 8x0 and also as IEC058 Which I guess might all be the same thing. Do the 1.0.13 Alsa drivers support this chipset? if so how do I wget them?

Hi,
Ok, the plot is thickening... I don't know if KM will support the AD flavor you have or not however sometimes times you have to manually check things out.
As root run alsaconf and see if your card can be discovered, it will do a pretty good job at trying. If it doesn't come up with something, try the isa search also but just be sure to unmark the first item (spacebar)

If it discovers something, write it down! Should report what driver it will load as snd-____ and you want to fill in the blanks for later.

After it runs & it says installed & enjoy, then try alsamixer again. You should have sound after you set levels and uMute a couple of settings. Let us know if successful as it will go away on a reboot and you surely don't want to do the alsaconf on every boot / reboot :) or do you ?

See if it works first.

Don't type the $, that is your shell prompt (just as C:\> is your prompt in Windoze). If you are logged in as root it should appear as # instead of $.

thanx. Tried that and now I have no sound card!

Alsaconf workd and found an nVidia nForce2 based card, and set it. Now when I try and run Alsamixer or amixer I get a device not found error!

I think I'll just go out and pick up a $20 sound card!

Hi,
If you can't run alsamixer as user mythtv you may as well not have a sound card. If alsaconf can't load a driver then you basically don't have a usable sound card.,

I have found the compusa $25 unit works quite well.
