Greetings:

This question may have been asked before, but your search system does not recveal any topics on the subject.

Is there any 64- bit version of KnoppMyth planned for the near future?

I have a 64- bit machine, that I plan to run with multiple TV cards. The only thing keeping me from using Knoppmyth is the fact that I was only able to find 32- bit versions of the installation.

As it is, I am forced to use Fedora Core, since it is the only decent version of Linux that enables me to install everything (including MythTV and its subsidiary programs) easily on a 64- bit machine.

I would not mind using KnoppMyth if I could, since the installation will be easier, but without a 64- bit version it is looking pretty useless.

So: is anyone planning to correct this oversight soon?

What is stopping you from compiling mythtv with an AMD64/EM64T aware compiler? The only performance improvement you are likely to see is from the higher number of registers in 64 bit processors. 64 bit arithmetic will not make mythtv any faster/better/cooler. Or do you need mythtv to access more then 64GB of ram?

I'm curious. Exactly what problem are you solving by moving to a 64-bit image? Since I'm running a combined FE/BE with three HD cards displaying on a 1080i HD monitor, and doing it all with a lowly 32-bit system, I'm really curious what problem you are solving.

You are correct that 32 bit x86 architecture was limited to 4GB or address space. But late model 32 bit architecture CPUs can use something called Physical Address Extension which allows them to address more then up to 64GB.

But even if you were running mythtv on a 386 I don't think addressing more then 4GB of RAM will help you much.

Actually, there are several things "stopping" me -- the main thing being that it has already been done.

There are already several distributions of MythTV that are available -- including the one which runs on Fedora Core, which I mentioned in my previous entry.

Besides: it is not MythTV that I am looking for a 64- bit version of (why should I when these distributions already exist!)_. It is a 64- bit Knoppmyth that I am looking for. And the main thing "stopping" me from creating a 64- bit Knoppmyth, frankly, is my lack of competence in creating such a distribution.

So my question, so far unanswered, remains: Is there going to be a 64- bit version of Knoppmyth? If so, when?

And yes: I do need a 64- bit system for running a 64- bit MythTV. My reasons for needing it, however, are my own concern...

So you want us to create a custom distribution of linux just for your one computer setup. But you wont tell us why you need certain features? Good luck with that.

Unless there is a good reason to create a 64bit version, it is unlikely they would bother.

The 32bit version works great on both old and new processors, so why would you go to the trouble of creating a seperate 64bit version if it doesn't offer any benefits over the standard version?

Yikes! are you my nine year old daughter?

lack of competence? knoppmyth has not been ported to a Cray nor an HP 128 processor array. not for lack of skill but for lack of need. This stuff runs happily on an xbox and will run 32 bit on your hardware.

I never comment non-technically but you stepped over the line. Let me see if I follow your comments correctly

1) you have 64 bit system running
2) you want to use knoppmyth
3) because mythtv has no need for 64 bit no one goes the extra step to make it happen
4) you dump on dale and cesman as incompetent

I hardly concider focus (stable code on the platform that EVERYONE uses) over porting (to an overkill system that ONE person uses) as incompetence.

With that said, here is all you need to do .

Get sources and type the following
Code:
cd /usr/src/mythtv
config <64bitMaleOverCompetence>
make
install

But we still don't know WHY any of us would want or need a 64-bit version.

Let's state the question clearly, for anybody to answer: What benefits come from upgrading to a 64-bit version? (Besides it being 64-bit!!)
