Looking to buy a remote for my myth box.

What is the the best remote to get to work "out of the box" with mythTV and Knoppmyth ?

The Streamzap remote + IR Receiver from mythic.tv works great, and can be taught to fancier universal remotes like the Harmony 880.

Thats 2 that I have come up with a search as well. They must be the top two types to select from if recommended here as well now

I was looking at the StreamZap for AU$59 and the Harmony 520 for AU$109. Is it just that the Harmony does many electronic devices in the home that its more expensive then the StreamZap ? So in other words, if one is only going to use the remote for their Myth box, any reason to get the Harmony over the StreamZap ?

So you need to get an IR receiver when buying any of said remotes ?

If you're just going to be controlling the Myth box, then the Streamzap is all you need. If you also need to switch inputs on the A/V receiver and TV, control the volume, etc., then you need a more sophisticated remote that can switch things over when the kids are done watching XBox, for example. That's the great thing about the Harmony, is that it knows, for example, that to watch MythTV, it has to turn on the TV and A/V receiver, and set the inputs to 6 and 4, respectively. And that the volume/mute commands go to the receiver, not the TV or Myth. Likewise, for XBox, it sets to 5 and 2. For the old DVD player, set to 5 and 3, turn on the DVD player. For TiVo, set to 1 and 2. For VCR, set to 3, 3, and turn on the VCR.

You need some sort of IR receiver, right? Otherwise you may as well shine a flashlight at it.
The Streamzap comes with its own.

The Harmony remote needs to assume certain things about your hardware. MythTV with StreamZap remote, is something that it knows how to emulate. Same with the Happauge remotes, I think. MythTV with "homebrew IR Receiver" is going to be harder to figure out.

Programming the Harmony or even the StreamZap for that matter, is it dependant on Windows software ? I haven't any Windows computers in my house.

Right. It's a universal remote, meant to replace an armload of remotes. Why would it come with its own receiver? You won't find any universal remotes with their own receivers.

You need windows to setup the Harmony.
Not the streamzap. It already knows what it's supposed to do.

I use a Mac to do it. Connected the Harmony to a Linux box via USB, was hoping for external storage or something to be recognized, but no dice.

I use a Harmony 880 with an MS MCE IR receiver I found on Ebay - I believe it originally came with a Dell media center of some sort. Set my Myth up to emulate an MS MCE USB remote, works fine. I'd like to do some customizing, but it is functional.

You can run the Harmony remote software for Windows under vmware session. That's what I did..

The other thing you can do is have an IR blaster so that your computer can control the other equipment. Then you can set up certain buttons on the streamzap (or whichever myth remote you have) to control other equipment by making the button run irsend to activate the blaster. I do this to control my tv (on/off, volume, channel (since I dont use the number buttons in myth, tv/av). This is a kind of poor man's universal remote.
