Not sure if I should start a new thread, but here's my experience upgrading from R5D1:

Ran upgrade from the install CD, seemed to go ok. On reboot I have several problems:

1. ath_pci modules not present so can't use my wireless adapter
2. no sound
3. mythbackend crashes? at boot, but runs if I start it in an xterm manually.
4. remote not working
5. 'watch tv' gives me a black screen which I can't exit out of and doesn't timeout.

So basically I'm dead in the water.

I'd like to get the network up first, are the madwifi modules in the distribution? They were in RD51 so I was hoping they would be in R5E50.

Or perhaps they changed drastically enough that 'modprobe ath_pci' isn't correct any longer?

Please see the newly updated R5E50 Upgrade hints and hazards posting and the TroubleShooting pages on the wiki.

Note that both of these get updated regularly so don't assume that you've "already seen that".

<sheepish grin>Never mind about the analog card troubles. The upgrade issues I had appear to have been coincidental -- even though the problem started when I upgraded and went away when I downgraded, the card started acting flaky again under R5C7 last night, and as of this morning it died entirely. Must have been an ill-timed hardware failure.

I've got a PVR-150 on the way, and I'm going to do a clean install of E50 when it arrives.

Thanks to TJC for the help, and for the Hints & Hazards post.

Just wanted to say thank you to ethernut for finding the resolution change fix for the pvr500. I had the exact same problem and the fix you found cleared it right up. Needless to say I owe you one because I never would have found that and the problem was definitely a showstopper.

Thanks again.

Where exactly would the settings for Vbi and the 720 x 480 be located

Thanks

For the VBI, exit out of the Frontend, kill the backend, and run mythtv-setup again. I found the option under General and solved my problem right away.

Thanks ethernut as I was pounding my head for a while trying to solve that issue. Now to start a new thread for my sound that sometimes works.

Great job on fixing this. I have been without myth functioning properly since January. Nice to be back. I'm adding to new 2-14 post about this thread.

My IVTV Issues - Fixed

Quote from the IVTV FAQ Below:

Quote:
Quote from an e-mail Hans Verkuil send to the list.
I've just confirmed that capturing at anything but 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) and capturing VBI at the same time (for teletext or closed captions) will produce bad video and bad VBI data on cards with a cx25840 such as the PVR150 and 500. Cards with a saa7115 are not affected.

Since MythTV for some reason captures by default at 480x480 I strongly recommend you change that to 720x480 (720x576 for PAL/SECAM) if you also want MythTV to process VBI for subtitles.

Since fixing the cx25840 setup is quite difficult due to the bad Conexant datasheet and the workaround is simple I will not fix this for the time being.

Any idea where this capture resolution is configured, is it configured for a nova-t dvb card for example?

Disabling VBI processing fixed the problem for me as well. Major cudos for the youtube posting. It helped me see that the problem you were talking about was the same I was having!

Where is the resolution set? The capture card settings? I'll have to poke around after this recording of mythbusters (no pun intended) finishes ;-)
Thanks all!

I have avoided this problem until now. I have upgraded to R5f1 and the livetv video is now fuzzy, tearing and blocky.

VBI is off and resolutions all set to 720x480. I did not have this problem before with my PVR-150.

Did you shut the machine down cold to get the old firmware cleared and the new stuff loaded? I've had very good capture quality with the 0.10.1 drivers and the matching firmware.

Have you checked that you don't see the same issue with old recordings? I know that the switch to the x.org X server meant reworking my output settings some to get the display quality back up to what it was.

Don't forget to check the troubleshooting pages... http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=PictureQualityIssues
