When I connect my myth box to my tv, I see the computers post message, as well as all the Linux startup information. However it seems when x windows try to start, the screen just goes black.

When installing knoppmyth, I selected, "tv" at the startup prompt, to get 800x600 resolution.

If I press Ctrl + Alt + F1 to get to a console, while connected to the TV, I get these wave lines on the TV. I quickly changed back to ctrl alt f7, for fear that mode was going to break my TV.

If I bring the box back into the office and hook it up to a monitor, it works fine.

I am using a ATI 7200 card with composite out to the TV. I don't have the adapter to use the svideo output of the card.

Does anyone have an idea how I can get output to my tv? Thanks.

See this wiki page for some techniques to get your X configuration working - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenAfterInstall

I've tried making the changes the wiki suggests:
Code:
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 contains:

HorizSync 30 - 50
VertRefresh 60

and also

Code:
edit your lilo.conf. At the top, it should say vga=<XXX>. Change it to vga=normal

but still no luck.

I also think it has something to do with the XF86Config-4 config. I've lowered the resolution to 640x480, just to try and get it working, but no luck.

This is what I have so far:

I wanted to clarify that I can see the computer POST on the tv screen, as well as start the linux boot process. However when it gets to running gdm, the screen just goes black.

If I try ctrl alt f1-f6 I get a black screen with white fuz.

Seems to me that the TV can't properly display what the video card is pushing out. Could it be as simple as getting the correct XF86Config-4 file?

Strip out all the extra modelines and go with something conservative. These work for me:
Code:
        Modeline "640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525 #60Hz
        Modeline "640x480@60" 24.11 640 672 760 792 480 490 495 505

Also go see the X logfile "/var/log/Xorg.0.log".

I removed all the other mode lines, and put in the two conservative mode lines you suggested. I still get the same black screen after gdm starts.

I ssh'ed into the box, and ran mkxf86config These are the results:
Code:
root@mythtv:~# mkxf86config
Video is (yet) unknown card, using XFree86(vesa) Server
Monitor is Generic Monitor, H:28.0-96.0kHz, V:50.0-75.0Hz
 Using Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

I'm guessing my TV can't display 1024x768, which may be the cause of my problems? I don't know why its using 1024, as I removed all those mode lines from the config file.

What are the next steps I should try to debug my mythtv?

Thanks for all the help.

Most of the drivers come with a bunch of built in modes, there's usually a way to tell it to stop using them, but I don't know what it is for your card. Check the log files to see if this is happening for you. You may also be able to use the key sequence to switch screen resolutions, sadly I don't recall what it is off the top of my head.

I've tried the ctrl + alt + + and -, but they don't seem to change the resolution. After gdm starts, I can't even seem to use ctrl alt f1 to get to a command prompt.

Sadly, I will be forced to use M$ Windows and some PVR application that runs on top of it. Linux may be free, but thats is only the cost of the software. Linux seems to take about 10 times more effort and time to get working, even for the most simple of tasks.

I appreciate you taking time to help me troubleshoot my problems. Have a good new years!

It looks like you have an ATI card. If that's the case, then you may want to check this out:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... +Video+Out

If not, you probably need to change this line in your XF86Config-4 file:
Driver "radeon"

Thanks very much for the pointer. Unfortunately I've already installed windows on the machine and am trying another PVR. But I when I get back around to MythTV, I will definitely try your suggestion. It sounds as if it may fix the problem.
