Hi,

Gee, it sounds like a stomach ache.

You are rather vague, what version of KM? Some hardware details could be of help.. did you go through all the set ups? Is the drive large enough to hold a cd? Type of cd, music, video, did you hit esc? Is this your first go around with KM? Does the rest of the system seem to work ok?

I'm not at the system now so I don't know the version, but the IDO was created in the last 60 days and I did an 'auto upgrade'.

Yes, this is my 1st KM system and am a Linux newb. The MB is an ancient, el cheapo PC Chips (M765MRT i think) running with a P3 500 & 256MB. Install was done on a 6.4GB drive, I think I succussfully added a second drive with LVM, DF shows 7GB myth volume. The CD is an original store bought music CD. The tracks are all read with their times.

The install was mostly uneventful, but there were a few anomolies. When I exited main (i think), I got a 'Cannot write <some directory whose name I forget> /.test, would you like to correct this?'. I answer yes, but it kicks me back into main in an infinite loop. I answered, no I know what I am doing (haha) and its gone now.

One other item. I did the install with no tuner (!), so myth thinks its a FE, its not, its my only box. I should have the PVR150 today, so that should be fixed but I don't see why a FE would not be able to riup a CD.

Weather/Web/News seem to work fine.

Hi,

Thanks, maybe we can get things on track now.
To find out what version you are running, simply at an xterm window prompt $ cat /etc/K* (use alt x to open)

Processor & memory should work.
The drive is a little small, however you should have about a 5gig root partition and a swap file that is useable. df -h will give the two main partition sizes and if you run top you can determine swap file size.

I would suggest, start over using R5D1 or R5C7. Manually repartition the drive to have two partitions. / on hda1 & swap on hda2. Once you have done that, do an AUTO Upgrade as that should rebuild eveything with out doing the partitioning process.

Later we can set up your second drive to be a /myth partition for your media. Depending on the size of it may require a few extra tricks.

You don't need a tuner card to setup the system however again, you have to go through the motions and pretend to add a tuner card and all the other steps. Since you will be obtaining a 150 card, set it up as if it was already plugged in. You just won't be able to assign input connections, but try anyway :)

You get this far, drop a note and we can procede. There is a link in the Off Topics that takes you to a movie on install.. may be worth the view :) Besure to refer to Cecil's "Pamphlet" for guidence to make swap. Depending on the size of drive two.....may be a different story.

If you do a check on some of my previous posts, most of this has been covered previously.

Did you check that the music directory is set correctly (it is typically /myth/music) and that it is owned by mythtv?

The music directory is set in one of the setup screens (i think under media).

Do a "ls -l /myth/music" and verify that mythtv owns this directory.

Hi,

Because of the drive size
Quote:
6.4GB drive
he most likely ran out of inodes in the myth partition before the setup was completed. Then it doesn't any difference who has rights as there is no where to put stuff.

If he follows as outlined above, then it should be a functional system (mine was) with very limited (~1.2 gig) storage space. That is why NOT to use the tv other than for a couple of minutes to simply test. A 1 gig storage space will hold ~200 +/- tunes.

Thanks for your help Mike. I seem to not have much luck with this search engine, so if you have covered this in another post and can suggest the right search term, or post the URL I will go there.

Cecil's pamplet says when manually partitioning, 4 partitions should be made. I'm assuming your process gets this down to 3: root, swap and then myth on the second drive? I'm assuming 'the cache', that cecil puts on partition 3 will end up on root partition? The second drive will be another 6.4GB drive (this was what was laying around).

No PVR150s to be found locally, the pvr350 should arrive on friday. With this ancient box, the mpeg decoder is probably needed anyways.

Right now this is 'dads PVR' build mostly with stuff from the boneyard. I am hoping to get it greased well enough to get the family to give up the TIVO, if I can do this, I will buy a real mobo and have a 250GB drive I can use. Right now I just want to cobble enough together to get a few hours of recordings, to get the wife to sign off on ditching the tivo.

Hi,
Not a problem with the "older" stuff as I do my best playing in that catagory :)

I will have to go back and review Cecil's document as it may have some residual items for earlier versions. At one time a cache partition was needed however not currently and is doubtful in the future.

As a tool, you may wish to grab a copy if the gparted live iso. Excellent tool to help the new comers to see how things lay out in a more graphical way. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php and also will allow you to format the second drive in a standard manor. For the small drive with the big data chunks, you run out of space to mark the storage before you run out of actual storage space. df -h shows space and df -i shows the index space although if df -i = 0 then df -h will also show 0. How clear was that?

with a pvr-350 you will be best with R5C7. Should be a rather easy auto upgrade and it only had one minor (easily tweaked) flaw that didn't show up for months. R5D1 has an issue with getting tv out of the 350 card that takes a little extra effort. You can always auto upgrade later if desired. I am assuming that you will want the display to end up on a tv eventually?

Before actually starting, what is the exact status of your hda1? three partitions? what sizes of the partitions? 5 gig is typical for the / and I like 384meg for swap with 256 of mem. The rest could be used for a place just to "save" things that you will accumulate along the way :)

Some times it is actually easier to look for something if you know who wrote on a topic by looking at their profile. Then you can look through the list by person.

Well, it seems that Alan called it. The music directory was missing, I created and assigned it to myth and all is well.

Note to mike, I see my iso was made at 5d1, so i will probably be hitting that pvr350 bug. I see there is a howto inthe wikki for the350, I'm assuming that will have the info to fix itup.
