I've run into problems with audio, but the R4 distribution has very few tools to get at the problem. I would like to see a more complete Knoppix distribution that would allow KDE, Web browsing, mixers, etc. 8)

I'm a Linux newbe... I tried going the tasksel route, but end up getting conflicts installing even the simple things. I'll try to work through the issues, but I still think that a more complete Knoppix would make it easier.

well the more you add the more resources you use, and knoppmyth is designed to be a set top box distro. I would rather it stay that way and you install the apps you want/need. I want a lean setup so I can record two shows while watching another and right now I can do that with myth. add all the kde and or gnome overhead and I doubt I could.

Although I don't like recommending more work and not being able to help since I'm no linux guru, possibly a KnoppMyth-Lite, KnoppMyth, and a BigKnoppMyth types of distributions could help.

Good idea, but no. I want to keep KnoppMyth as small as possible. My original goal was/is to only include what is needed for a set-top box. Folks can easily install any other desired package using apt-get. Trying to support 3 versions of KnoppMyth isn't something I want to do(at this point).

Personally, I'd like to see two versions: 1) a KnoppMyth frontend
only version cut down with no servers or development packages - a very lite version, and 2) a KnoppMyth lite version like R4 but without development or
source stuff.

Those both seem like interesting ideas, isn't it possible to do that all from one cd just with different install options? Why spend a lot of bandwidth and time making three seperate distros when you could simply make install options like:
1. Mythfrontend - only install mythfrontend, no devel stuff
2. knoppmythlite - knoppmyth with no devel stuff
3. regular knoppmyth just like r4, devel stuff and all.

I admit I don't know much (Ok anything;) about how knoppmyth installs with the livecd and all, but it seems like it should be relatively easy to do what I've mentioned. The added benefit to this is there is only one CD to maintain and it makes it much easier to mirror knoppmyth as well because there is only one cd.

I'm very happy that the install is as small as possible.
If anything, I'd like to see the install get smaller if it's possible.

i.e. Not installing ANYTHING that's not needed on my hardware, and parts of the software that aren't wanted.

I'd like to keep the harddrive space usage to a minimum. Maybe a selection list during install can ask if you want certain optional modules like mythgame, mythnews, etc. to be installed. If you don't check them, the files never go to your harddrive.

You should also be able to put the cd in and run an update program so you can select to add a module if you'd like it in the future without reinstalling everything.

I am with Dale and Mr. X here - smaller still would be good.

I personally would like a backend-only ISO, which didn't install X, but I know it would be a pain to maintain multiple images, even if they are quite similar.

One way forward on this is to do something like the Freepia developer did. That started out as a hand-crafted distro, but is now evolving into a set of tools that you can use to create your own Freepia distro. (just a set of scripts and config files that you install into a more fully featured Gentoo distro.)

The simpler the better. Its always easier to add to than to take away. Pile lots of things on, and then you have to worry about more variables, incompatibilities, etc. For those who want to pile things onto their system, there is a VERY easy way to do so:

apt-get update
apt-get install [package]

the debian site has a complete database of sotfware if you are having trouble finding what you want. One day I was bored, and kept installing/removing linux games via apt-get. Its real easy, and fast. The sofware is even compiled for you! I admit, for the novice the command line can be intimidating, but just do some reading on it, the link with tutorial on apt-get, and try
#man apt-get

it even has some good stuff to get your feet wet

the main reasons I use knoppmyth:

1. easy (except setting up a pal pvr350 and tuning it to dutch channels)
2. its small
