I was happy with mplayer for DVD's, then my wife bought a Spongebob DVD for the kids. It has a lot of different episodes and you need to menu's to navigate.

I'll add my voice to the echo: xine for DVDs and mplayer for avis/mpegs

Without the DVD menu it can be really painful to switch to another language. Most Americans won't have this problem, but in Europe it's fairly frequent.

I think you can vote without posting a comment.

OT here, but anyway: simply start mplayer with the option -alang de,en. This tells mplayer to first search for the "de" (german) audio track and, if not available, to search for the "en" (english) audio track... works perfectly, I never had any problems with it.

However, I voted for XINE only. Any reasons, why not using XINE for everything except liveTV and recordings?

only reason I would say not xine to everyting is that is just seems more clucky and I don't think it has as much codec support, but I could be wrong on that and the whole clunky feeling probably comes from their horid gui design, which I know you don't see in knoppmyth, but it's burned into my mind from previous uses of it on linux.

setup mplayer to play everything, but setup xine to play dvds so you can get the dvd menus. xine is slow to startup and mplayer plays more formats but mplayer doesn't do dvd menus. So the above choice seems reasonable.

I was told also that the autopaint_colorkey issue was resolved with the new version of xine.

LOL... Don't worry, the site isn't being hosted in Florida.

Yeah, but isn't California where they've had the most widely publicized issues with electronic voting machines? ;-)

that's how I currently have it configured.
