well...brilliant idea. one I never even thought of...but it still didn't work:-( My lircrc currently reads
Code:
begin
   prog = mythtv
   button = play
   config = P
end
but it still doesn't work...irw still does, so the remote and the receiver are communicating correctly...i'm not quite sure where the problem is occurring...

Sorry,

I'm not that much of an expert, if irw run as mythtv user account shows you something like this(I pressed #1 button):
Code:
mythtv@mythtv:~$ irw
0000000000000b59 00 1 sony.rm-ax1400
0000000000000b59 01 1 sony.rm-ax1400
0000000000000b59 02 1 sony.rm-ax1400

I'm not sure where the problem is.

Verify that your lircd.conf file refers to the play button as "play". This is case sensitive, too, so per your post about your lircrc file it should be all lowercase.

yeah, my entire lircd.conf file is lower case, for simplicity. I wasn't sure if the "config = p" part was case sensitive, but I tried it both ways and it still doesn't work...I think my next step is going to be trying to use lirc with another program (such as vlc or mplayer) and seeing if that works, but I have to do some research on how exactly to do that first...maybe that will at least narrow down where the problem is...

Where is your lircd.conf file? I can never remember the right place to keep it, so I make sure that I have the same exact file in both /etc/ and /etc/lirc/

my lircd.conf file is in both /etc and /etc/lirc, but I have some information that I hope will help someone who knows more about lirc and knoppmyth to be able to figure out where the problem is...I have created a line for mplayer in my lircrc file. If I start a movie from mythvideo using mplayer as the player, the remote doesn't work. However, if I start mplayer from the commandline (still using mythtv as the user), the remote works fine. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

Ok, I take that back...I was certain that when i started mplayer from mythtv that it didn't work, but I just restarted mythfrontend, and once mplayer is running, the remote works fine. I even rebooted to make sure. It still isn't working for the rest of mythtv though. My lircrc currently reads
Code:
begin
   button = pause
   prog = mplayer
   config = pause
   repeat = 0
end

begin
   button = pause
   prog = mythtv
   config = P
   repeat = 0
end

the pause button works when viewing via mplayer, but not when viewing recordings via mythtv's internal player.
