First post here so be gentle with me ;-)

I've got version 3 of the card which apparently can be run using the NDISwrappers. I'm trying to get this to run on a Dell Optiplex GX240 with an Hauppauge PVR-350 - most of the installation is working fine but I'm having trouble gettng the WiFi card setup.

I've created a directory and copied across the WG311v3.INF and .SYS files and have done the following:

Code:
ndiswrapper -i /lib/modules/2.6.18-chw-13/netgear/WG311v3.INF
ndiswrapper -m
ndiswrapper -hotplug

The ndiswrapper -hotplug command doesn't give me any output at all so I'm assuming that it's run OK. However, when I do:

Code:
modprobe ndiswrapper

I get the error message

Code:
FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found

so I'm assuming that the hotplug command hasn't worked. How can I tell ? Where should the ndiswrapper file be written to ?

Thanks in advance

Phil

You may want to check out this thread if your using the latest release, R5E50.

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13424

Basically, ndiswrapper in this release doesn't appear to be working.

Welcome to the Knoppmyth by the way.

Thanks for that - I'll try apt-get remove ndiswrapper and will then recompile it from source.

I haven't had this much fun since working on iSCSI back at the turn of the century

OK, quick update.

I've run:

Code:
apt-get remove ndiswrapper

and get the error:

Code:
Couldn't find package ndiswrapper

which begs the question, how can I uninstall it if it can't be found ? I then tried:

Code:
apt-get install ndiswrapper

But was told that I needed to add a source to my sources.list file.

I've checked that and it looked ok so I don't know what to do now.

I've never used debian before and had heard lots of positive things about its apt-get command but so far I'm far from impressed . . . .

Anyway, could someone post the exact steps that I need in order to remove, download, compile and install a working ndiswrapper ?

Thanks in advance

You can grab the source as per my post in the above mentioned thread(as per the vmware wiki entry, as per...). After those steps, you'll need to
Code:
make modules_install
which will destroy your current functioning system (i.e., ivtv and other modules), but at least you can get it compiled for transport to another R5E50 build... I think I had to hack the Makefile or pass variable for $KLIBS or something to get it to work, but it was late and I can't remember.

I posted the compiled module with instructions to install it in the above mentioned thread, but it seems that you probably won't get your card to actually associate with an ap. Try it and post your results...

Thanks for that - I did look at that thread but got lost.

I'll try it again tomorrow once I've slept on it . . . . my brains just not functioning at the moment.

Yeah, my brain is pretty much gone right now too... I do suspect, however, that there is also a problem with the iwconfig/wireless-tools stuff in R5E50. I plugged a native wireless card in and can't get it associated to an ap via iwconfig either. I'm going to sleep on it for a day or so and then give it another whirl.
