Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out how to get the volume control to affect the actual sound level. The controller works fine (the bar goes up and down); just has no affect on the actual volume.

The card is set up with Alsa and adjusting Alsamixer works. I've read that switching the 'Mixer Device' from 'dev/mixer' to 'default' is the way to fix this but that didn't seem to work. I'm pretty sure I've tried every combination of the Audio settings. Any ideas?

I found that disabling the 'use internal volume control' and setting the volume using alsamixer solved my problem of very low volumes.

Thanks for the input, but my sound is fine. I'm just trying to figure out out to get the volume control to actually control the volume. When I'm watching TV the volume bar moves up and down by using the remote, except the volume doesn't actually change.

So have you tried having the mixer control "master"?

Oh, and check which mixer device it's using as "default". You might discover it's the motherboard sound... What does this show for you?
Code:
root@black2:~# ls -al /dev/ | grep audio
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    14,   12 Feb  5 23:44 adsp
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    14,    4 Feb  5 23:44 audio
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    14,   25 Feb  5 23:44 dmmidi1
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    14,    3 Feb  5 23:44 dsp
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    14,   18 Feb  5 23:44 midi1
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    14,    0 Feb  5 23:44 mixer
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    14,   16 Feb  5 23:44 mixer1
crw-rw----  1 root   audio    10,  135 Feb  5 23:44 rtc

I tried setting the mixer control to 'master'... no go. Here's what I got from that grep:

Code:
jhoskins@mythtv:~$ ls -al /dev/ | grep audio
crw-rw----  1 root     audio    14,   12 Feb  6 21:10 adsp
crw-rw----  1 root     audio    14,    4 Feb  6 21:10 audio
crw-rw----  1 root     audio    14,    9 Feb  6 21:10 dmmidi
crw-rw----  1 root     audio    14,    3 Feb  6 21:10 dsp
crw-rw----  1 root     audio    14,    2 Feb  6 21:10 midi
crw-rw----  1 root     audio    14,    0 Feb  6 21:10 mixer
crw-rw----  1 root     audio    10,  135 Feb  6 21:08 rtc

Any ideas? I'm kinda surprised I'm the only one with this issue. Or, maybe most people just don't care. I find it kind of annoying using two remotes.

Thanks in advance for any input.

How about your lsmod output?

Mine works with PCM, but your problem isn't all that unusual, it's come up at least a few times in the past six months. A search of the forums should turn up other folks with more or less the same issue and may even turn up a fix. Search for "sound" or "audio" and "mixer" and "master" and "volume". Don't forget to check the "search for all terms" box on the search page.

Here is my lsmod return: http://jonaben.com/misc/lsmod.txt

I was able to find one thread relating to this http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11615&highlight=mixer.

One thing I hadn't thought of, was switching the output I'm using. Currently I'm using the green, speaker/headphone out. As soon as I get home, I'll switch to line-out and see if that does the trick.

No luck on switching to 'line out', btw.
