tjc,

All is set at default.

I installed 63 and had the same problem. read my entry in #testers. Reply to that thread untill we have a lock on the problem.

Problem is I don't even know what the current defaults are. I know what my settings are, and I'm hoping to notice a pattern of differences like "Everyone using the OpenGL rendering is having issues".

Also sisnce this is a problem which is visible in a released version, and other people with that version are seeing it, discussing it here gets us more data points.

OK, under Utilities/Setup -> Setup what are your settings for:

-> Appearance
    -> screen 1
      - Paint Engine
      - Qt Style
    -> screen 5
      - Use transparent boxes
      - Popup background method

-> TV Settings -> Program Guide -> screen 1
    - Guide shading method
-> TV Settings -> Playback -> screen 1
    - deinterlace/method
    - MPEG decoder
    - Enable OpenGL vsync timing

These are my defaults (I've not changed anything since reinstalling)

Appearance -> Paint Engine: Qt
Qt Style: Desktop Style

Use transparent boxes is checked.
Popup Background Shading Method: Fill

Guide shading Method: Eco-Transparent

Deinterlace playback is selected, algorithm is linear blend
mpeg2 decoder is standard (I've tired libmeg2 and xvmc and notice NO difference in either CPU utilization or anything else).

Enable OpenGL vertical sync for timing is UNCHECKED

Mine is just like yours.. Except I turn off linear blend.. NEver noticed it helping over the years..

Do you have any issues with the OSD messing up?

The OSD itself doesn't appear to be incorrect, it just causes massive pauses and "skips" while it's "visible" on the screen.

When I watch "live Tv", Mythfrontend will be about 45-55% Cpu utilization.

With the OSD on, it's shoots up to about 95-98% CPU utilization.

The big things I see so far are the interlace method (I use bob2x), and the OpenGL sync. I'll have to double check the Guide shading method I'm using...

It'd be nice to have more data points...

Another data point...

I just fixed the XvMC line in the /etc/X11/XvMCConfig file to read "/usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1" and my HDTV playback just smoothed out A LOT and my CPU usage went down on HDTV playback too. So, clearly XvMC wasn't working before.

Along with that, my OSD elements changed from color back to black and white, like I had with XvMC in R5D1 and R5C7. And, there are audio drops and video jerks while the OSD is on screen.

My settings are:

-> Appearance
-> screen 1
- Paint Engine - QT
- Qt Style - Desktop Style
-> screen 5
- Use transparent boxes - checked
- background method - fill

-> TV Settings -> Program Guide -> screen 1
- Guide shading method - Eco-Transparent (low CPU)

-> TV Settings -> Playback -> screen 1
- deinterlace/method - Bob (2x)
- MPEG decoder - Standard XvMC
- Enable OpenGL vsync timing - NOT checked

I just performed the painful nvidia driver update process outlined in this thread:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13443&highlight=

Followed by editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and adding the line:
Code:
Option "UseEvents" "True"

To the "Device" section.

That was it. All the skipping with the OSD is GONE! AND, the OSD is color rather than black and white!!

For those with nvidia cards in their systems, nvidia driver updates are CRUTIAL to improved operation of KnoppMyth.
Cecil, PLEASE make it easy to upgrade nvida drivers agian.
The painful process of downloading the source and recompiling the kernel just to do a simple driver update is not something I want to do after each install of KnoppMyth.

For reference, the nvidia 1.0-9746 driver is my new champion of HDTV video. It will be a huge help to have it as the default nvidia driver in the next KnoppMyth.

UPDATE:
I'm depressed to have to report that the color OSD I've been enjoying for the past few months was because XvMC got disabled again during the nvidia driver update. I just went back and looked into the /etc/X11/XvMCConfig file and it had been changed back to the wrong version that comes stock with R5E50. After I edited the file again, XvMC was activated again and my OSD went black and white. Oh well, maybe someday xvmc will work as advertized...

Eric
