Last night I was playing with my R5E50 test rig. I wanted to transfer mythconverg from my R5D1 production machine to the test rig, so I thought I'd make the test rig do a backup first. I chose to use the backup menu item in the test rig's frontend (rather than from a command prompt).
As I watched the backup do its thing, it occurred to me that it was taking an awful long time. Like hours.
I eventually killed the process when the "savedfiles.tar.bz2" file went over 14Gb....

I'm not sure what went wrong, so I thought I'd ask if anyone else (yes, I've searched the archives) has seen this.

I have two symlinks in /myth: /myth/music and /myth/video/video are linked to nfs-mounted directories on my media server. It seems as if the backup was including their content...?
I also had at that time a Samba-mounted share in /home/mythtv/mnt (I had mounted my R5D1 Samba (mythtv) share). It struck me that the backup might also be including the Samba-mount?

I haven't unzipped "savedfiles.tar.bz2" yet to see what's inside.

If I do a command-line "mythbackup", all is well.

Mythbackup saves all of /etc /root and /home. So, yes, your samba share was mounted in /home, so it was likely being "backed up." Try mounting your samba shares outside these 3 directories. /mnt is a good place. Check out the wiki for info.
